Well yeah. Its the ‘big city people don’t give a crap’ trope, more accurately, the ‘City of Weirdos’ Trope. On the flipside, Twilight likely would of enjoyed an illusion spell when she wasn’t judging in Trade Ya! All the people there recognized her, only saw her as a celebrity and she really didn’t like it at all.
Coincidentally, even though the City of Weirdos trope has existed for ages, its current illustration example for tvtropes.com is a mlp comic XD
Your statement that unless they do some sort of illusion/cover up every episode when they go anywhere her being a princess will be a constant plot point that can’t be ignored. Then in Rarity Takes Manehattan Twilight is told off to get her own cab to her face.
Hmm?
I’m sorry, this is just hillarious in hindsight. “You can get your own cab.”
Me too.
S4E1:
Rainbow Dash “These clouds sure aren’t from around here.”
Applejack “And try as we might, us earth ponies can’t do anything to get rid of them.”
Rarity “Alas, this whole raging situation seems to have left my horn on the fritz.”
Zecora “The results would be tragic, it only responds to alicorn magic.”
Too bad the writers don’t feel the same way :(
I think there’s something wrong with me. I don’t see Twilight Sparkle as an alicorn OR a unicorn; I see Twilight Sparkle as Twilight Sparkle.
Exactly.
@CMIZAX
You are just looking to start a fight. Nothing is certain, so stop trying to pick a fight with a fake ‘truth.’ Do you even know how often the tropes “A God(Royal) I Am Not” and “De-Power” are used in magical girl anime?
Either she’ll stay a princess or she won’t. The best the authors can do is try to create good stories for as long as they decide she’ll stay an alicorn princess.
Agreed?
@PonyPon
Precisely. Is it assured they will keep her an Alicorn forever? Of course not, plans change. Does the Princess Twilight plot have merit? Well so far we haven’t seen any, her only royal orders to the guards was a 2 second plot thread that went nowhere, the guards were completely useless. In fact, I’m surprised they even allowed her to leave Canterlot seeing that she was the ‘only one capable of giving orders’ to the guards.
As you’ve noticed, the only pony to see Alicorn Twilight in non princess related matters since the beginning of S4 is Daring Do, and its a bit of a stretch that even an adventurer would not react at all to 4th-Only-Alicorn-in-the-World aka Twilight. Do you know why the Doctor from Doctor Who is able to have so many adventures in so many different time periods while maintaining SOME discretion? Its cause he doesn’t physically stand out, he looks human. “Clark Kent’s glasses” won’t save ANYONE from recognizing a purple horn and purple wings on one pony.
We can only see if later episodes make headway in the corner they’ve written themselves into.
Don’t start. This page does not need anymore provocations.
Accepting it’s permanence wouldn’t stop anyone from debating its merit.
Oh a lot of us know that, the artist already informed thus. But its just odd.
But the pink frilly dress? The goofy smile on Princess Sparkle’s face? The mage unicorn Twilight looking at the Princess version with disdain?
The feel of the picture isn’t even remotely close to ‘I just wanted to draw Alicorn Twilight and Unicorn Twilight meeting face to face.’ with no other motivation.
An EIGHT year old would ask the question “Why is Twilight looking at Princess Twilight like that?”
@Kakapo
I mean no offense by this Kakapo. I’m just saying what you drew and what you intended don’t resemble each other at all in the eyes of the masses.
And your right, people will use non-canon books the same way they use Equestria Girls.
I am not ‘completely’ sure about my opinion of the current FiW team. If you ask me, the point the show had the best potential for writing was right before or after Keep Calm and Flutter on….that’s where IDW decided to start its continuity.
@Kakapo
The artist makes a really nice picture of two different Twilight Sparkles meeting face to face, people go on debating pony politics for over a hundred comment posts.
Or better yet, something like a Buster Call, something that completely wipes an image, the comments and all the controversy it caused on the site from the site’s memory.
Used only for EXTREME cases.
What.
Doesn’t matter how the producer of the books views it standing in canon; some fans can choose to weld the books’ continuities together with the show’s continuity and parade these headcanons around, the same way some fans can still treat EQG’s continuity as part of canon despite Meghan claiming the contrary.
@Ping_chan
@CronoM
There are a few issue that I have with current production team, but there’s no point furthering this discussion since it’s clear your confidence on the current FiM team is unmoved. Feel free to continue following the show; I’ll go back to my business drawing.
It could change your perception of Cadense…if the books were remotely semi-canon at all like the IDW comics were officailly stated and not contracted by the marketing division. :/
@Ping_chan
Yes, exactly. The FiM crew is great, the producers at Hasbro pulling the strings, not so much.
Summarize as, the FiM crew really wanted to present a solid story line, but they only have so much budget and screen time to present it all. And Hasbro wants to sell pretty princess horse toys. Which many people on this site have bought, I think.
“The comics don’t have to be supplemental to the show because each story in-universe is self-contained”
Self-contained canon is not the issue. The issue is that the comics and children’s novels attempt to fill holes the show failed to address, and that makes them supplementary to the show.
“And how is the show relying on the comics in the first place?”
Notable case in point: The way both mediums respective dealt with Cadence.
The show presents her as a near-perfect character that is hard to relate to with a husband and kingdom conveniently bestowed to her, and little backstory besides her being a pleasant caretaker for Twilight in her earlier years. In comparison the Shining Armor Micro and Crystal Heart book go into depth developing her character and justifying her existence in canon through the revelation she was a pegasus that also ascended into alicornhood (which also attempted to be consistent with Twilight’s ascension) and the origins of her romance with Shining Armor.
Cadence’s depiction in the books can indirectly affect the reader’s perception of Cadence in the show, even if events in the books are not closely tied to the show.
