Actually it comes from the idea of making the uneducated morons at the front of the stage enjoy the show so much, they drool, causing the actors to slip and break a leg. Although the bad luck part was part of it too.

It’s actually from the theatre tradition that it’s bad luck to wish someone good luck.
That’s not exactly a very logical idea, is it? I mean, yeah, as mammals, humans and cows have an instinctual sort of knowledge that milk comes from the mother and it’s good to drink it. But milk from another animal entirely? What the heck?
