It’s entirely possible that it was those fellows keeping him from moving up. It’s also possible it was a fairly minor promotion.

I think Shining Armor would have turned down the offer knowing Twilight was the reason, want to earn his title.

Yeah probably. Simply promoting him for it probably still wrong though. I’d be okay if the two guards were punished for it, but there’s no reason Shining Armor should move UP.

I think tripping someone so he smashes a bunch of plates, then confining him to barracks for it goes far beyond hazing.
 
Rookies and newbies usually get the dirtiest jobs, that’s pretty normal, I think. But tripping him so he wrecked stuff crosses the line.

Seriously, if Shining Armor can’t emotionally handle some hazing, how will he deal with random strangers trying to kill him?

I agree with you there. I’m sure he felt some payback was in order, then got on with trying to be a good officer.
 
I’d also point out that Shining might start pushing it too far, only to catch sight of Twilight watching and straighten up. Gotta be a good role model, after all.

That he did that for a few weeks at most, and then just left them alone.  
Because first off, I doubt Shining is particularly petty.  
Secondly, Celestia won’t take kindly to the guy she just promoted turning into a bully himself for petty vengeance.

So THIS is why the royal guard is so incompetent, starts from up top.

Whatever it is, those morons had it coming. When you’re going to bully someone, make damned sure they aren’t the brother of the frigging GODDESS EMPRESS’S beloved protege. It’s just common sense, guards.

Hm. I think you’re right there. Nepotism is benefiting your family unjustly. Cronyism is benefiting your friends or followers unjustly. Since Shining is her protoge’s brother, this’d be more cronyism than nepotism.
 
But again, I personally believe Twilight simple showed Celestia what was going on, and the princess wasn’t happy. And I might be nitpicking, but the fact that guard dared to use Cadence’s name without her title would probably peeve off someone who is a stickler for protocol (Shining could be forgiven, since he and Cadence are actually going out).
