Now I’m thinking, what if those trees were in Ponyville? If that was the case, Applejack wouldn’t need to do her applebucking all that much anymore maybe…

These trees are even scarier than the ones on The Wizard of Oz.

Wind Whistler got the action pegasus role in this one, and she really did not disappoint.
 
At this point, Fizzy has been following her around on this adventure like a big kid who’s just so overjoyed to be spending time with her awesomely cool big sister. Forcing myself to put down my shipping goggles for a moment. This is the exact moment it becomes clear that Fizzy is following Megan and Wind Whistler’s example too, and has gained enough confidence in her own abilities in dangerous situations to be of use. Not such a silly pony now, right?

The voice acting drifted away from the on-screen speech noticeably in this movie. For example, Danny’s VA gets one of Wind Whistler’s lines briefly close to this scene. That’s one of the things that later generations fixed up, thankfully ☺

Lotta kids’ stuff was “hardcore” in the ‘80s, at least by today’s standards. Even Disney got surprisingly dark with “The Black Cauldron” (to their box-office detriment, in that case).

Looking back at it, G1 was surprisingly hardcore at times.

This is a really interesting point… G1 does have more fighting action doesn’t it? Sometimes the ponies’ allies get in on it too. One of my fave fight sequences is the giant florie flower monsters vs. the giant crab nasty police force.

Man, the G1 series was freaking badass.

You know, other than Twilight Sparkle teleporting herself and her friends out of the forest when they were being chased by the dragons in Dragon Quest, I can’t think of a scene where she’s used her teleportation magic in combat like this. Then again, G1 had a lot more fight scenes than FIM, so maybe she just hasn’t had the chance to show off yet.

Man, G1 sure can be HARDCORE!

I might make a list of ‘best looking’ story arcs from MLP ‘n Friends or such, in regards to animation quality and consistency. There really is quite a wide variation between bad and good.
 
It ought to be said that the dialogue and script for the series is mostly really good though, Dream Valley is one of the most dense and fascinating fantasy worlds I’ve ever read or seen, and I don’t say that lightly. It’s going to take MLP FIM awhile longer to catch up in terms of world building.

Oh you’re absolutely right. I am of course referring to MLP n’ Friends, not the specials, which look fine. Though I think the facial animations for the ponies can get kinda weird (like whenever Applejack or the Seaponies look directly at the camera). The Movie seemed to have ironed out a lot of the animation hiccups and looks quite good given its obviously low budget compared to, say, Disney or Bluth.

It’s more a matter of budget constraints then. You ought to look up the ‘rescue at midnight castle’ and ‘escape from katrina’ tags too, that’s the 1st and 2nd specials respectively, while the movie is chronologically the 3rd. All three of these have much higher budget than the show that follows.

I see the trees and I’m like, “Hello animation.”
 
Then I notice it’s from The Movie, the one part of G1.0 where the animators actually tried.

Fizzy may be a ditzy airhead, but she’s brave and quick too.
