Yes, yes it is.
Oh, and the Gaia Fortress haymaking Dark Gaia, that too.
The only bad thing I can say about the PS2/Wii version is that Sonic doesn’t pull a King Piccolo on Dark Gaia, but hey, you can’t have everything in life.
The first phase in the PS3/Xbox 360 version isn’t a Punch-Out reference, though.
That’s… actually better, I’ll be damned.
I’m sure you weren’t the only one. And at least in the Wii/PS2 version, when you’re at the second phase, you don’t have a super short time limit, it’s much easier overall to do, and you only have to do the first two phases once (unlike the PS3/Xbox 360 version, where the first phase is totally different and you have to do the first two phases three times each to get to the final phase).
Can I admit I hummed the Minor Circuit theme when I was fighting the first phase of Dark Gaia?
Oh, it did, but like most of the boss battles it was very different from the PS3/Xbox 360 versions.
I’ll be surprised if the PS2 version even had a final boss.
Then you don’t get to go all Little Mac against Dark Gaia!
What about Mephiles?
Gilda, obviously.
With Lightning Dust as Shadow.
Yeah, I remember that. I bought the game all excited because Sonic was finally fast again and then I had to play as the werehog 75% of the time.
I never finished that game.
The Werehog was even worse in the Wii/PS2 version. In the HD versions, you at least had 2-3 Daytime stages and 2-3 Werehog stages per continent (save for Eggmanland, which is painful no matter which version you’re playing). Wii/PS2? 1 Day time stage, several mandatory Daytime “missions” that took place in chunks of the main level, and 4-5 Werehog stages each. And the Werehog was a lot less interesting, because instead of some interesting combos and fighting moves, you had four or five different moves TOTAL that consisted of either flailing the Wii Remote & Nunchuk around or hammering the L and R buttons, depending on which controller you’re using.
Now, admittedly, I haven’t really played the HD versions, but from what I understand, it’s the superior version. Even if it does have problems of its own (pressing the X button 60 times in 10 seconds to beat the second phase of the final boss? Really?).
It was certainly better than Sonic ’06 and Shadow the Hedgehog, but the Werehog gimmick took up WAY too much of the game. Either way, Sega stopped retailing the game.
Sonic Unleashed was a quality Sonic game.
Cool, I’ll have to look into finding a copy of Red Steel 2 in the future.
I was referring to the sequel Red Steel 2. :P I own both and I agree the first one is “meh” but the sequel, which took a “Final Fantasy” approach to being a sequel (unrelated story but some gameplay similarities), was actually pretty awesome. It did Motion+ sword fighting before Skyward Sword came out (though admitted I do think Skyward Sword’s combat was a bit more refined), and had a nice cel shaded style that worked really well with the Wii’s hardware limitations (closest thing to seeing Borderlands on the Wii IMO). It still features gun combat as well of course so in a way I’d say it’s like a good first person version of Devil May Cry. :)
I’ve never played Red Steel (even though I heard it was pretty “meh”), but No More Heroes is freaking awesome.
Yeah, it does suck that the Wii missed out on lots of good third-party titles. Even Capcom teased us Wii owners by saying that it was possible to make Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for the Wii, but they didn’t have any plans to do so “at the moment.”
Don’t ya just LOVE when they say “at the moment?” It’s the same thing as saying “never.”
Anyhoo, you’re definitely right about the Sony and Microsoft fanboys. They really have no right to bitch about not getting certain exclusive titles, after all the times Nintendo has been getting shafted in recent years.
