yeah discord out of all the villains got the closest to winning and still lost because he’s a cocky bastard.
Every major confrontation. Like… every single villain this show has ever offered us?
Nightmare Moon got her ass handed on a plate, Chrysalis was blown into oblivion the moment she lowered her guard, the Crystal ponies are still picking up Sombra´s pieces and Tirek is sitting on his sorry ass on Tartarus. Let´s be honest; the villain´s success rate is quite low. Discord is the closest one he got to winning.
And yet he has lost every major confrontation. Celestia and Luna are useless. Controlling the Sun and Moon probably has more to do with knowing the right spell than simply being powerful.
Do you remember that time he controlled the Sun and Moon, was a greater force Celestia and Luna could handle on their own, and maintained a rule of Equestria for QUITE a while?
Of all the villains, I dare say he is the most powerful and the one who has gotten closer to victory. Actually, the second he was free in S2 he had already won! He just told them where to find the Elements so he could have a challenge.
Not that I’m on Sunset Satan’s side and her badly thought out plan, but people tend to overestimate Discord’s power. He is a minor reality warper.

We already know the Element of Magic can utilize mind control. We know she already has two Alicorns under her spell- Luna and Celestia. She can power up her peons into monsters. Is there really anything saying she couldn’t just mindcontrol the Equestrian Alicorns? Not really.
Oh, and just incase someone tries to pull the Discord card.
Discord can’t do jack to the Elements, that’s one of the things Celestia made sure of.
Also, Twilight could throw off Discord’s grab on her in his own two-parter using her magic.
This is just conjecture anyway, as Discord turning good was unknown to Sunset at the planning moment.
Without Discord, Sunset would steamroll Equestria.
This is what pisses me of when I see reviews of this movie. It’s flawed, even bad in a lot of ways, but Sunset’s plan is actually really good.
