That is utterly meaningless to me. Does it mean something to you? That we didn’t have progress then so we can’t have progress now? Progress doesn’t always have a lot of fanfare heralding it in, it can come in an instant. In that instant, it’s assumed it will never come again, because it is believed our status quo is the pinnacle of human achievement. While it might be, eventually, I prefer to remain open to the much more historically well-founded possibility that it is not.
To be honest, that’s what everyone thought back in 1994 when we all had 14” CRT monitors. All that happened over the 20 years was that we got IPS monitors twice as big and still no VR in sight.
Allow me to correct him, this is the future with VR in general. The Rift being primarily a headache inducer, it’s a sorry pick for the device capable of the above picture’s reality anyway. Unless Suckerberg throws some of his ill-gotten gains at it and makes it usable. Unlikely.
Kid, seriously, take a step back here. It’s not that bad, and there’s already plenty of escapism. Sides, if the world’s so damn awful, why is escapism bad?
Or, if the world’s so damn awful, why do we want to maintain the status quo and preserve human society anyway? Nobody would mourn its passing, after all. So put up the wet blanket and let’s go get toasted with ponies in space or some shit.
Ladies, gentlemen and otherwise I shall now attempt the most depressing comment in the universe.
We look at this and say “that’s kind of sad, but hey, ponies. I want one.”
The truth is much, much worse.
Some kind of virtual reality life simulation thing, effectively a holodeck, would be the ultimate in escapism and would lead to the downfall of human civilization.
You see, we all have dreams. We want to change the world, or become rich and famous, or fist fight dragons on the moon and for almost every single one of us that will never happen. In all likelihood you will toil all your days doing things you hate for people you don’t love (or even like that much) before dying in both debt and obscurity. At the most a handful of other insignificance humans will mourn your passing and the only lasting impact you will have on the world will be your grave.
But with the holodeck that doesn’t have to happen. With true virtual reality suddenly dreams can come true for everyone, even if its all a lie.
And it is a lie. And no matter how much you or I may acknowledge that fact we will never give it up because by and large every single one of us is doomed to failure simply by virtue of the universe being a cold uncaring place that doesn’t give a shit about any of us, or even itself.
Goddamn that was bleak. I’m sort of appalled at myself now.
I remember when Virtual Reality was the next ‘Big Thing’ in technology back in the 90s. The tech back then just wasn’t up to the concept, though. Maybe Google Glass will work?
I’m afraid I only have two hands, though that does increase my chances of getting laid. I am truly sorry to hear about your unfortunate mutation, and only hope that one day you can live a full and happy life as I have.
Oh how wrong you were.
NONE OF YOU THOUGHT THIS STUPID JOKE WOULD BE REAL 3 YEARS LATER
Edited
The word you’re looking for is skepticists.
I believe I have spent enough time speaking to cynics.
Okay, call me when it happens.

Sorry, Oculus Rift was bought by Facebook and will now only be used for things like Farmville 3 and Fruit Ninja 2.
I’m going home now.
Don’t worry, that was bush-league compared to what Lovecraft could come up with.
“every single one of us is doomed to failure”……WRONG…>___>
I don’t think it was bleak, just wrong. Please don’t mistake me for that jock-rider over there.
@Alalic
Relax. That was me deliberately trying to be as bleak as humanly possible, though I think I still fell far short of Russian literature.
Holy fuck, that’s depressing.

Sadly, I can’t “like” this comment
