While Shining Armor and Cadance were visiting Ponyville, it dawned on Shining that even though he and Spike had been relatives for more than ten years, they’d never spent any ‘guy time’ together.
So they both begged Cadance and Twilight to let them go on a hiking trip for the day.

Hm, I always went with the more literal “cutie mark is symbol becoming an adolescent” (hell, the party is named after a Latin American coming of age holiday) and put her at like 10 or so.
I have Twilight as being between 5 or 7 when she got her cutie mark (Spike’s Birthday is also the same day remember).
Regardless of how you view his and Twilight’s relationship (Mother and son/Big Sister and little brother) Spike IS Shining Armor’s relative.
Now consider that most of Spike’s time was NOT spent around Shining Armor, and that description makes more sense.
Then why did he go from being a newborn sucking on his tail to being trusted to take care of pets/be home alone in the ten or eleven years between his hatching and living in Ponyville?

To be fair, it’s not really the same thing.
It’s the eye color of an incidental background pony compared to one of the most important developments in the entire series thus far.

Hard time believing Spike wouldn’t grow at least a TINY bit during that time. It’s not like he’s still an actual baby like when Twilight first hatched him.
