Maybe the adult fandom is a minority when it comes to buying merchandise?

Why? Who has the purchasing power? Children want toys, but their parents or aunts/uncles will be the ones buying most of those toys for them, won’t they? So why not try to broaden the appeal of your merchandise as much as possible to include the ones with the money to spend?

Yeah, but those are “special editions”-type stuff. Most of their Star Wars and Marvel stuff is aimed at kids.

My point is this: a Lego set is both a toy and a “I will assemble it an add it my collection” item. A Funko figure is both a toy and a collector’s item. A Hasbro figure (again, not counting special edition stuff) is just a toy.

It’s what TV Tropes calls Multiple Demographic Appeal: appealing to adults and children at the same time. Lego and Funko can do it, Hasbro (not counting the special edition stuff) can’t.

And this is WHY Funko and Lego are kicking Hasbro’s ass: both Funko and Lego appeal to both the adult demographic (who want Funkos for collections, and Lego for the thrill of assembling a set) and to kids (for obvious reasons), while Hasbro only appeals to kids.

Can you really blame Hasbro? MLP and Transformers are their only two in-house toylines with a pulse (most of their success is with licensed stuff), and with G5 being one year away, they have to keep MLP going until then.

Also, Hasbro has to try extra harder to plug their toylines, since they are constantly getting their asses kicked by Lego and Funko.
