You watched the TV series, right? Not the movie compilation? Because the movies are awful.
Well Zeta sure doesn’t beat its predecessor (0079), but as far as TV series go it’s one of the better ones. The story is kinda average but the sci-fi aspect is very well highlighted, many MS and weapon designs are great.
If you think Zeta is bad, don’t even bother with ZZ or Victory. The UC timeline is best done in OVAs anyway.
