Honestly, without all the nutty expressions, this episode would’ve been a waste of time to watch.
It had no real substance. So really, the faces saved this episode. And, orbash is right.
If they had the budget and skill they have now back then, they probably would’ve been doing them more often.
Although, not as commonly as now of course, because of the writers that have joined the team, but still.
This was also their last chance to go all out with them. Because as Twilight herself said, “No more freaking out.”
If you’ve ever watched the Anime “High School of the Dead”, you’ll understand my point.
Tl;dr, nearing the end of the show, the level and amount of fan-service grew to a ridiculous level.
But after one last episode of fan-service craziness, it suddenly stopped, more or less.
MLP did the same thing here, only with crazy faces. People just happen to like turning these things into memes.
It seems you don’t enjoy this sort of thing, which is fine. Similar to how I don’t enjoy loads of fan-service,
in an otherwise serious show (HOTD), or in general really.
Yes, it’s true an episode shouldn’t rely on crazy faces to make it a winner. But sometimes,
because of the writers skill (or possibly preference for silly faces), that’s just how the cookie crumbles.
On top of this, kids loove crazy faces/shenanigans in media. And since that’s still their target audience
(even thought they’re well aware of us adults), they keep on putting them in.
Not to mention there are tons of adults who eat this stuff for breakfast (like myself).

Some people take silly faces too seriously.
Sounds like you’re not much of a connoisseur.
That was season two, episode 3. But nowadays it seems that they”re doing just it as an excuse for memes.
Umm, season 1, episode 3 when Twilight was scared she’d be tardy. They’ve had overblown expression since the beginning. They’re just more common.
No, they haven’t. They didn’t start doing the overblown exagerrated facial expressions until season six. It’s gotten to the point where they do it practically every episode now.

Emotions are not memes, and they’ve been doing faces like this since beginning, only difference is they got a bigger budget.
The meme-worthy facial expressions shit they’ve been doing since season six.
What memes?
Yah, the trick is not need memes in any way, but for them to be a useful byproduct, like asphalt
Funny how they didn’t have to do that back in the early seasons. They just relied on great, memorable characters and interesting, relatable stories. It’s telling how far downhill this show has gotten when the staff think they need to resort to memes just to get people to watch your show. And again, they’ve been doing this shit since season six.
I’m well aware of that, my point was that memes help to serve as a secondary lure, two is better than one

These new writers don’t have that ability. And why on Earth would they need memes to lure people in? A good writer should be able to lure their audience in with good, memorable characters and a gripping, character-driven story. That’s what worked for other shows like Gravity Falls and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
They should try and do both, that way they have memes to lure people in, and a good story to keep them there
But that’s a problem when they do that at sacrificing the story and characters for “LOL memes”, which they’ve been doing since season six. I’d much rather have an entertaining story with likable characters rather than an episode with nothing but the animators seeing how many meme faces they can cram into one episode.
Yeah, they really went all-out on the FAIC-making this episode. Not that I’m complaining, mind you, it was pretty hilarious.
Nah, she’s just excited, that’s all.
And so is Pinkie.
The show itself has even joked about the similarity between these names.
Ok, that’s better.
Or a Sugar Belle. :D
Put some sugar on that and I guess you could call it a Sweetie Bell?
