earlier it’s said that the cave is “several” meters tall at its highest point, so… taller than the deep end of an olympic pool, plus ponies are smol.

Sometimes one needs to take liberties with the original story, to produce this level of art. The original book dimensions are just not conductive to this kind of art.  
So artistic licence is justified IMHO.
