It’s the similar character not the similar abilities
Lauren Faust, who created FiM, is the executive producer of DC Superhero Girls. Therefore, it’s hard not to draw comparisons to the character, since they share similar characteristics.
Now that you mentioned it. Remember that love potion episode the CMC made? It turns it’s almost exactly like the PPG episode where they get Professor Utonium and their teacher dating and ignoring their responsibilities.
just watched the “WasabiWar | DC Super Hero Girls: Super Shorts” I could see a little of AJ’s stubbornness in Supergirl.
Edited
Kind of what I was thinking, but the slight touches of other personalities just isn’t enough for me to consider them different.
Also I figured Supergirl was the most aggro parts of AppleDash.
Batgirl Twilight-nanners and Pinkie
Green Lantern 1/4 Rarity and 3/4 Fluttershy Environmentalists
Supergirl is Rainbow Dash x2
Wonder Woman is AJ and leadership Twilight
Zatanna is Rarity and… okay she’s all Rarity
and Bumblebee, is Flutter”shy”

And the CMC have a striking similarity to the PPG’s
Honestly “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it”.
Edited
Actually, Lauren is very aware she rehashed MLP. Check her Twitter and she says “because they used to be horses” or something along those lines.

The idea she had for Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls (which predates both shows) also uses similar character archetypes. From what I recall she said it’s mostly unintentional. It happens sometimes.
Zatanna might be interested in magic, but in this case magic tricks really is just a topic that replaces dress making. Twilight is more of a nerd and book worm, not the fancy feminine show business gal. At best it would be Trixie replacing Rarity.
Zatanna is literally Rarity, her personality and style screams it. Rarity is the farthest from an eco-friendly protestor like Lantern.
AJ -> WW.
Twi -> Zatanna.
Rares -> Green Lantern.
I think it’s a downside, because it shows that Lauren doesn’t have much creativity if she can only work on 6 specific character archetypes. She has the same issues as many Anime writers creating their main characters often being clones of eachother only recognizable by flashy hair color while they entire perosnality can by summarized as either “moe” , “tsundere” or “protagonist bland nice guy”
Isn’t that a bad thing, reusing the same personality types?
