Yeah, I guess you’re right.. The thing is if Thorax actually took Ocellus home then and there, then the spirit of the Tree of Harmony would’ve likely perished.
@Red-Supernova
Looking past his spoken reason, Thorax’s character is meant to be a foil to Chrysalis. When a hive changeling goes unaccounted for, Thorax personally went on a hunt to find them, himself, to make sure they were okay and to ultimately retrieve them. Not something Chrysalis would have done in a million years, she’d sooner name anyone who left the hive without prior knowledge a traitor, as she did Thorax.
Thorax’s seriousness in this scene was largely a manifestation of his worry. He’s meant to be seen as a paternal patriarch/father figure as much as a leader, because he’s wholesome and loving and cares about all the changelings - again, playing on that foil, the antithesis to Chrysalis. This paternal nature has been hinted at before, when Thorax enjoyed organizing arts and crafts and other fun activities for the changelings, but I think it was really defined, here.
I thought this scene was perfectly in- character, tbh. Thorax cares for things with extreme depth, and thanks to Ember, he’s able to express that forwardly, now.
His language was chosen well here, on top of it all. He literally sounds like a dad or legal guardian.
‘There you are! The hive has been worried sick!
…
Well, next time, ask before you run off. Now come on, let’s go home.’
On a related note, the hive has been depicted more as a pack animal thing post-reformation, as opposed to the insect hivemind we had under Chrysalis. Now we have families all living together in a close community. Everyone probably helps look after everyone else, especially the young ones. Thorax (Pharynx too, but especially Thorax) probably behaves like an additional parent for most buggos.
At least that’s what I like to think, and what I write extensively about.
Edited
And I kinda want Gallus to get kind of flustered over it
That was never established in the show. That is only headcanon. Headcanon is fine until people assume that it is canon.
although there is a greater chance that thorax and ocellus are siblings because you know chrysalis is the mom of all the adult drones, also ocellus is afriad of being like her
Edited
Then again, it’s just me. And I may change my opinion in the future.
To Thorax being all serious. I knew Thorax was gonna be in the episode once I saw this screencap, but I did not see that other part coming. I know, it sounds stupid but still.
To Thorax showing responsibility and authority for his Changelings?
Eh, guess I’m not used to it.

@Background Pony #345F
Like what Fanthrose said, he doesn’t want the possibility of a war between all races to happen. So I don’t blame Thorax for being annoyed that Ocellus made him panic for a bit, all he wanted was for her to ask his permission to leave the hive. And now that he’s heard the reason, he was fine with giving Ocellus permission to be with her friends.
Well, I know that… I just don’t really know how to explain my point I guess
As he said in the episode, last time the 6 of them went missing like that, it nearly started a war between the 6 races.
@Dracorex
I mean, I could commission an image, but you wouldn’t be ready for a couple days.
I don’t know, the closest is a lewd Smudge did.
I agree.
