The whole Derpy is great thing was real subjective to me. I never cared about her appearance in LRU and it felt like people at the time were making up any excuse to promote their pony in some then culture, favorite, pony war. Applejack didn’t have a “flaw” or exaggerated feature so the loudest people put that label on her. Pretty stupid really.

I think people started calling Applejack a background pony after The Last Roundup in season 2 when Derpy stole the show by talking for the first time and RD calling her Derpy (before it was edited).

Pretty much this, as the names were there in one form or another. To be fair I think it wasn’t until season 3 or 4 that the whole “Applejack is a background pony” thing set in. The jokes back then were that she was the “boring” or “the normal one.”
