Manifesting giant fists, has actually been around in alot of things.
Heck in “Turtles in Time” Baxter Stockman had a laser gun that could do that. (Taken from the TMNT cartoon.)

Though, seeing how it’s made of sand/dirt looks like it could be a Sandman nod.
