From the class I’m in right now, the elements not only have to have the same number of themselves on both sides, but they’re ionic charge also has to be balanced as well.
In a nutshell, everything on the left side of the equation has to “balance” everything on the right side.
It’s algebra, applied to chemistry: everything that comes in has to go out, no magically (dis)appearing elements allowed, otherwise you end up with an ‘unbalanced’ equation.
