The fandom may have made it a popular term, but sure as hell didn’t coin it.
If it becomes official and not just preferred fanon then it is canon, until then its at most a shout out.
The charm increased Trixie’s unicorn powers. It didn’t actually turn her into a winged unicorn, so it seems to relate more to alicorn as a unicorn’s horn.
But the they already used that word in the show O_o
Isn’t the term Alicorn already canon? I mean there was an amulet, in the shape of…. an Alicorn.
If that doesn’t mean it’s canon I don’t know what is.

The baggage surrounded the word alicorn makes it my least favorite, on a strictly practical level.
Yeah, and it is also a name for a winged unicorn, popularized rather recently by Piers Anthony.
And it sounds better than “pegacorn,” “unisus,” or “winged unicorn.”
Just sayin’.
