Alicorn is the legendary name of a winged unicorn in northern Spain, for well over a hundred years now. Given, the things wings were on its hooves, but it was a winged unicorn called Alicorn. The term has also been used elsewhere to describe winged unicorn well before FiM.
 
The fandom may have made it a popular term, but sure as hell didn’t coin it.

I will never ever ever ever ever refer to ponies with unicorn horns and pegasus wings (and supposedly earth pony magic too.) as alicorns. I may quote someone directly, but I will never apply that terminology myself. Do whatever you want though.

The term originally meant the stuff a Unicorn horn is made out of. The wings on the amulet could be decoration or a shout out to the fans but it is not canon yet for Winged Unicorns while Winged Unicorn is.
 
If it becomes official and not just preferred fanon then it is canon, until then its at most a shout out.

The charm increased Trixie’s unicorn powers. It didn’t actually turn her into a winged unicorn, so it seems to relate more to alicorn as a unicorn’s horn.

Isn’t the term Alicorn already canon? I mean there was an amulet, in the shape of…. an Alicorn.
 
If that doesn’t mean it’s canon I don’t know what is.

There is actually a screen cap on here that shows use of the word Alicorn in reference to a pegacorn. And it’s used in a novel that was published over 20 years ago

Meh. That’s a matter of opinion. I actually think that Alicorn, whatever the word is used for, sounds kind of silly. I think that Winged Unicorn sound more poetic, and that Cerapter sounds the coolest.
 
The baggage surrounded the word alicorn makes it my least favorite, on a strictly practical level.

According to my books on folklore, “alicorn” is the word for a unicorn’s horn. I never saw it used to describe winged unicorns until this fandom.

Yeah, and it is also a name for a winged unicorn, popularized rather recently by Piers Anthony.
 
And it sounds better than “pegacorn,” “unisus,” or “winged unicorn.”

Alicorn was coined (for this usage) by Piers Anthony in his 1984 novel “Bearing and Hourglass.” Chapter 9, IIRC, was about a winged unicorn and was entitled “Alicorn”.
