Then again, I doubt that the locals built Canterlot with sieges in mind. It definitely looks like a chiefly civilian, peacetime city.

Really, Canterlot is the worst fortress in existence. It’s built on the side of a mountain, which means that enemy soldiers can easily scale up the mountain underneath those dome-like structures without needing to worry about ranged weapons. From there, they can just place large explosive devices underneath the city and get the hell out of there. Or they can just mine underneath the mountain and blow the ground out underneath their feet.
