Well the whole “Mushroom Kingdom residents being turned into blocks by Bowser’s black magic” thing was mentioned the the instruction booklet for Super Mario Bros. That’s where it came from. I dunno if it was only the American booklet or not but that whole claim has been debunked and/or retconned a long time ago.

Might be going for a pacifist run, which is possible from the no-enemies-killed point of view. Some people cite lore to claim that even breaking blocks or finding invisible blocks (some of which are necessary to advance) is killing transformed residents of the Mushroom Kingdom, but that seems like a fairly extreme interpretation.
