Pretty much. I heard he’s explored more in the comics, but the comics are still under the “only half canon” playing field where they basically say it’s canon unless the show writers explicitly say otherwise or do something differently. Which is a pretty loose definition. At any rate I don’t think he’s ever really been completely redeemed and shown to be an actually good person. As far as I can tell he’s basically just sort of there, being himself. Not really hurting anyone but not really popular either.

He’s only ever been a dick. He’s the biggest dick in the history of the show and it’s what he’s remembered for. The reason people hate him is simply because he’s a dick.
 
He’s not the most vile villain ever, I’ve never heard him referred to that way and I’ve been around since 2011. He does, however, have no redeeming qualities. He’s a Hate Sink, one of a number the show has produced over the years. He’s a cowardly, arrogant, self-important asshole. If there’s something to like about a character like this, it’s lost on me.
 
Only Spoiled Rich is anywhere near the level of contempt this guy draws for being such a bell end. If he was really as amazing as he thought he was, why was he available for a date on the night of the gala? Rarity should have stood no chance if he was really Prince Charming, being a mare from a little village in the countryside like she is and not having nearly the reputation she has now. Instead, he was alone and sought to impress himself upon this mare from a town he’s never heard of because she didn’t know what an ass he is.

It’s less that he’s being a dick, and more that the fandom treats him as a worst villain than every big bad in the series. There’s a difference between a royal snob and the fandom’s interpretation.

We get it. You don’t like this meme. I for one don’t see it as very destructive at all compared to other dead horses the fandom’s been beating, and I think its at least a sort of reasonable attitude towards his character as opposed to things like “Celestia is a tyrant bitch” being a thing more or less just because she’s a princess. Either way I don’t think it matters as much as you seem to make it out to be.
