It’s a little more simple and complex than that. Equestria really does exist in a geocentric, Ptolemaic universe. Celestia controls the _Primum Mobile, the sphere that sets into motion all of the heavenly bodies, each in their own sphere. Day and Night are actually just backdrops, raised and lowered by the Princesses as needed.
It’s certainly the idea I go with when trying to reconcile the show with reality.
My theory is that part of Celestia’s job is to keep the planet in an orbit where the temperature is ideal for life. But I suppose that Princess of the Sun sounds better than Princess of the Stable Orbit
