Thank you. That’s exactly the problem I had/have with a lot of Stygian’s portrayal.
That’s relieving to hear. I hope you’re right. Stygian needs to express regret for more than how things ended up affecting him personally, lest he come across as simply selfish. My biggest problem with the season finale, one that had been very good in almost every other aspect.
The last few pages, which take place after the events of Shadow Play, clearly show Stygian regretting what happened that led to him becoming the pony of shadows, which looks like will be explored more in the next issue/annual.
Not having read everything of this comic… does Stygian ever apologize for becoming the Pony of Shadow, or seeking revenge?
Ignore my handle for this question, I’m actually fairly indifferent to the character. Thing is, I can’t have sympathy with Stygian as everything always seems to be about him feeling sorry for himself, and only himself. I agree Starswirl apologizing was the right thing, but we’ve gotten to the point where the Bad Guy doesn’t even have to do that much. Stygian never said he was sorry, and I haven’t seen him express it in the comic so far.
A redemption story without regret is worthless, however.
Yeah right, he even brought the changelings to be in Equestria.
The episode already hinted at how this situation in this arc is coming around (Starlight’s “a conversation would have fixed everything”), but definitely puts this more on Star Swirl as lacking certain social graces (eg what friendship is) that created the problem in the first place.
I don’t care how much shoving they are doing to push a round peg of this arc into the square hole of the show, but this is doing a fabulous job to make this interesting and still guessing on how a few key events turn out.
That one was on Clover.
Clover might’ve learned from the best, but Starswirl ain’t responsible for that one.
Does the memory stone count?
The spoilers are in case someone hasn’t seen it yet.
Wow you’re right. I forgot about that.
And here I thought they stopped doing that when they made the rest of the Pillars. XD
I was talking in a meta sense but you make an excellent point.
I mean this just casts the entire thing in a new light. Stygian spent who knows how long gathering the group, bonding with and leading them all the way, and the exact moment he recruits Starswirl (his idol no less) everything starts to fall apart.
That’s pretty sad. Damn right Starswirl should’ve been the one to apologize to him after they beat the PoS.

He is responsible for pretty much everything.
And Starswirl himself is more or less solely to blame for Stygian’s fall huh?
