I’m not sure if anyone noticed, but it almost looks like Sonic is being forced to choose between his friends and the ponies in each zone. Here’s what I mean.  
Slumbering Town Zone - Tails and Spike are telling him to go down different paths.  
Sky Assault Zone - Silver appears to want help with the giant robot in the distance, while Fluttershy looks to need help as well.  
Pink District Zone - AppleJack clearly wants his help with something, even though Amy is dragging him away on a ‘date.’  
Frosting Peaks Zone - Shadow wants him to follow, but he seems to find racing with Pinkie Pie more appealing. Can’t really blame him.  
Crystalline Lagoon Zone - He’s probably going to have to decide who to side with in their little fight, Knuckles or Rarity.  
High Speed Pursuit Zone - Will he race with Rainbow Dash or try to take down Metal Sonic? Looks like he’s going with Metal Sonic here.  
Leviathan Egg Zone - I’m torn with this one. Either he has to decide whether to team up with Blaze or Twilight Sparkle against the final boss, or Twilight has suddenly revealed a hidden agenda.  
As someone stated before though, the story telling in these simple images is superb.

Terry’s crossovers are pmuch the only good Sonic/MLP crossovers ever made.

Slumbering City Zone
 
Aerial Assault Zone
 
Party Central Zone
 
Frosted Peak Zone (Peak, Singular, rolls off the tongue better.)
 
Crystal Lagoon Zone (Same with Crystal instead of Crystalline)
 
Highspeed Pursuit Zone (That one’s cool)
 
Egg Leviathan Zone (Just sounds better, imo)
