Well, according to the movie prequel novel “The Stormy Road to Canterlot”, Tempest was the one responsible for trying to steal the pearl because the Storm King sent Tempest to steal it. And the Storm King was also the one responsible for trying to steal the pearl too.
I remember her saying, in the season 4 episode Equestria Games, that she’s let ponies down. In all honesty the scene further proves her point as far as I’m concerned.

She didn’t lose any fans, Twilight hasn’t got the best track record for operating under extreme pressure, her fans know this. Remember that time she hexed the entire town with a doll because she was gonna be tardy?
To quote Twilight herself, she made the wrong choice, but she made it for the right reasons. Kinda hard to be mad at her over it, she’s just a purple doofus sometimes, what else can you expect?
I don’t remember Twilight losing her fans after that, but it certainly wasn’t a nice thing for her to do.
