Spoiler:
He gets wings in Molt Down.
Edited
That’s good.
Actually I just cooled off.
Of all things, the collapse of my 4 hour long reply sped it up and just made me realize the most important thing:
While we get passionate about things, we shouldn’t let it blind us. I accept my fault for being blinded.
I’m over it.
I don’t think it’s bad, im pretty neutral. But I don’t find them very well looking either.
I don’t mind Spike getting wings, in fact he doesn’t look too bad with them. He still looks the same as before and that’s pretty much it.
I just think Spike having wings kinda came out of nowhere, since nobody in the show never talk about it before, and we never see Spike complain about it either.

:P
I don’t get it either frankly. Hey, see? We can agree on something. :)
“Pro-disability” ? What the hell is that for accusation? Lol. How can someone even think of that.
Edited
I brought it up, because considering you seem so intent on “calling out others,” (Like Dane) maybe it’s time somebody called you out. I’m sorry, if I sound like a prick saying that, but you seem to get a tad aggressive/smug yourself, no offense, and frankly you need to work on that. Perhaps, it’s something we all here in this thread need to work on.
I bare you no ill will, but I can kinda understand why Dane lashed out at you, if you are hassling him as much as he claims. (Not justifying him entirely either, as he’s overreacted, as well.) Another reason I brought it up was to show how touchy people are getting on this “winged Spike” subject. I overreacted too, but at least I can admit that.
Still, I don’t wanna fight, so I appologize for bringing that up.
I don’t care if Spike gets wings or not anymore, but I feel people are getting a li’l too touchy/defensive about Wingy-Spike, (somebody below even tried to accuse me of being “pro-disability,” even though Spike isn’t exactly disabled at all) and I think Dane has one point that people who wanted him to get wings, shouldn’t be rubbing it in others faces, or getting too aggressive if others have differing opinions about it.
Same goes for anti-wing folk should at least give it a chance. Mature debate is fine, but I don’t wanna fight.
Edited because: Grammar
I only replied like that because he’s brought it up out of the blue two times now. Making it a bit ridiculous he’s apparantly still caught up about a completely different discussion which I don’t even fully remember anymore.
You could do to act less smug though.
Thank you for making sure nopony responds to you with any serious issues ever again.
Now then, this might not help, but since this discussion is for the most part centered around mistakes made in the past, moving on should be the ultimate goal. If Dane knows of a counselor or close relation that he could confide in, that may speed up the process, and if not, any outreach hotline where all staffers do is listen is another good option, I’d like to think. If there is actually something you need to address here to us, and if it has a significance outside of the aforementioned past events and discussions, you’re welcome to unveil it, if need be. :)
Seriously dude? Smh.
You have some points. Regardless if winged dragons are more common, your claim that all dragons have wings, even though I already pointed out Spike didn’t have them in previous MLP generations/canons. There are some other examples out there, (Disney’s “Reluctant Dragon” comes to mind.) So dragons being portrayed without wings isn’t completely unheard of in Western media as you claim.
So as I said it’s understandable why some bronies wouldn’t see it coming, or why some find it jarring for Spike to suddenly grow them despite winged dragons being common in the FiM canon.
Still, as I said I don’t feel strongly about it either way, I am curious to see how it goes. (Though, avoiding more spoilers, to avoid making any pre-judgements.)
@Hebbocake
No offense, but you tend to get rather aggressive yourself. >>1484604
Also, regardless of my statements there, (before somebody tries to attack me for “contradicting” myself, that was half a year ago, I feel more “neutral” about it now, and I’m actually willing to give winged Spike a shot.
Edited
Don’t know if calling you out for continueing the same behaviour you’ve been critisised for here is “stoking the flames”. But okay.
Edited
Hebbo has been following me around on a few other images doing the same thing; not contributing to a conversation, only “stoking the flames” as it were.
IE: His image is fine, but he provides no discussion as to why he agrees, therefore flipping it into merely something more likely to be taken as antagonistic.
Regardless, what’s done is done. One can only walk forward and accept what is now in the past.
Ponies here aren’t out to hate you. But, well, you’re incredibly aggressive, including namecalling. Look what happened with Hebbocake below. If you keep lashing out all around you, what response do you expect?
In the majority of he post that was eaten by derpibooru was me saying what ones I agreed with and no longer used as well as one that are still thought to be “debunked” but forget key crucial points.
But that is 4 hours I don’t want to go through again.
And my pre-emptive reactions have been based in the fact that many winged spiked images only give spike wings because the rest of the world and plot is totally bananas.
Because saying Twilight “just grew wings” is a massive oversimplification. They were ust the most obvious physical change but what actually happened was much bigger. She ascended into a race/position far greater than before which at that point was still seen as one of legendary proportions. Reality only set in afterwards for most.
Spike is a dragon. All bigger dragons had wings. All western/european dragons in modern pop culture have wings.
For him, it always seemed natural and expected that he’d get them. If he never did, ok maybe he was different somehow, but until the show specified that he was different in some way, it was normal to expect that he’d get them with age.
Also, Sweetie’s case was never expanded beyond she can do it, she’s just having a bit of hard time. It was never a big part of her character that she wished and dreamed of using her magic but something prevented her from doing it. She just struggled a bit at first for a little while. Scootaloo’s case was never even in the same dimension.
@TheAmazingPeanuts
Chinese dragons aren’t a thing in this show. At least not yet and I doubt they’ll ever be. We’ve already seen many dragons and all of them are the same kind, the western/european kind. The kind that almost always has wings. And every dragon larger than Spike had them. Brining in things like earth dragons and chinese dragons was always asking for more complexity that the show was ever going to provide, at least for any race that wasn’t ponies.
If the show had EVER hinted at there being other types of dragons, then this might’ve had some ground. It never did. All of them had wings, and apparently the only one that didn’t was the same rough height as Spike, further hinting at they coming with age.
No one said wings are gonna changing anything, other than whoever seems really pissed about them.
Not all dragons have wings if you do some research on them, there are at least two subspecies of dragons:
The European dragon, derived from European folk traditions and ultimately related to Balkans and Western Asian mythologies. Most are depicted as reptilian creatures with animal-level intelligence, and are uniquely six-limbed (four legs and a separate set of wings).
The Chinese dragon, with counterparts in Japan (namely the Japanese dragon), Korea and other East Asian and South Asian countries. Most are depicted as serpentine creatures with above-average intelligence, and are quadrupeds (four legs and wingless).
I don’t mind Spike having wings, but having wings is not gonna change anything.
Edited
People are fine with Sweetie using magic, so I don’t think there’d be that much drama if Scootaloo flew. (Except in a few small circles of fans whom hate any change, no matter how minor.)
I think some felt that, because not all ponies had wings, it was easy to assume not all dragons did, because of Spike, which is why some find it jarring, and why some prefer him without them. Not all dragons in Western media have wings either.
I recall, he never had any in the 1980s G1 cartoon of MLP, or the 2000s Millennial G3 counterpart, which is probably why Spike getting wings surprised some, as well. So it’s perfectly reasonable to understand why some wouldn’t see it coming.
I still remember fans speculating that Sweetie Belle would never be able to do magic at all. Meanwhile, Scootaloo can use her wings to generate a lot of thrust, as shown by her excellent scooting and even without a scooter in “Cutie Mark Chronicles” (S1), but she’s never been able to generate more than a little lift for a little while. Meanwhile, ponies her age were flying at decent and even record-breaking speeds in Flight Camp. At this point, there would be a LOT of fandom drama if one day, she was suddenly able to fly with no explanation, and I’d expect more than with Twilicorn or even Derpygate.
Spike is expected to grow wings because dragons are expected to have wings. Twilight didn’t just grow wings, she ascended to being an alicorn, the living embodiment of a fundamental magic, and holder of a destiny far more potent than being a mere unicorn student/graduate of Celestia’s school. Wings are as much a draconic identity marker as a horn is for a unicorn; never growing wings would make Spike the dragon equivalent of Fizzypop Berrytwist, whose horn was broken off in her youth, and whose identity was just as shattered.
Scootaloo isn’t a very good example, because unlike Spike & Twi’, she was born with wings. A better example or comparison, would be how the CMC got their cutie-marks, or how Sweetie Belle can use magic now easily, when in earlier episodes she couldn’t at all, despite there being other young unicorns also using magic easily.
Also, it’s kinda debatable if Scootaloo has a “disability,” as Scootaloo’s wings are not completely handicapped, and still function. She’s been shown fluttering a bit in the air, and in “For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils,” actually managed to lift herself, and her friends pretty high off the ground. So it’s a bit easier to understand how people would expect Scootaloo to be able to fly. She’s more like a “late bloomer,” then “handicapped.”
Also, I honestly don’t see fans saying they want characters to be “disabled,” and people prefering Spike without ‘em doesn’t mean they want him “disabled.” (Despite saying that, I’m not really against Spike getting wings. I don’t really care if he gets wings, or not overall. So there’s no need to be so defensive over it.) Maybe it just means they love Spike the way he is, or don’t think one minor physical change will make any difference. (Might allow him to do a bit more action, but not much else.) Some argue Twi’s wings didn’t make a difference.
Speaking of which, as I said it does seem a bit funny that fans are getting so defensive of Spike getting wings, after all the “Twilicorn” drama years ago, back when most fans were against Twi’ getting them. Why is it ok for Spike, but not Twi’? Fans seem to of been against it, because they wanted Twi’ to stay the same, while Spike seems to be for the opposite reason.
