Uhh…Did you watch the season 2 premiere?
Well some people believed that Tempest was the main villain of the movie despite having much roles than the Storm King. While others believed that Midnight Sparkle was the true hidden main villain of Friendship Games but not Principal Cinch.
I guess whoever made this considered Midnight Sparkle to be the main villain of Friendship Games, not Principal Cinch. I mean, the Storm King is here, but not Tempest, presumably because she was just a minion of his.
And it was also made before Cozy Glow and Grogar’s debut. Plus, Grogar doesn’t really count as a major villain anyway since he wasn’t really there.
What Starlight did there was create a timeline where the end of the world has occurred. And it was quickly undone. When you mane an alternate timeline, you can’t expect anyone to be aware of what happened. So I don’t think that tops the Storm King’s conquerer status.
I’ll take your word on the comics, but he still comes across as a buffoon in the movie in ways that weren’t narratively necessary in the movie.
Actually, his characterisation is pretty much the same in the comic, it’s just that they utilise the character better. Giving him more screentime, more focus on him specifically and less on Tempest, plus in the movie he only really showed up just before the plot said that he had to be defeated, so of course he wouldn’t have time to do anything too badass in that short amount of time.
Three: Chrysalis, Sombra, Tatzlwurm. Up until Edgehorse hit her with the cheap shot, Lovebutt was actually kinda badass.

I haven’t read them, but I have heard about it. Problem is, it’s contentious how “canon” the comics, chapter books, etc., are, and quite frankly I’m tired of seeing that argument.
However, if you do count the prequel comics, the fact that his characterization changes so drastically between them and the actual movie doesn’t exactly improve my opinion of him.
You can at least take a look at the prequel comics
Cadance had an on-screen fight before the movie ?!
Well, Starlight kinda ended the world (and then undid it, but still…), so at least one.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Tempest deserved more credit for most of the Storm King’s victoris than the Storm King himself did. He used the power of the Princesses far less effectively than Tirek did, and barely knew anything about it until after he got it and started to toy with it (he didn’t even know that Celestia and Luna’s powers moved the sun and moon). Tempest, by contrast, just came across as more menacing and dangerous, and at the very least, she was a competent tracker, fighter, and interrogator. She really shouldn’t have been able to pull off a lot of what she did (Twilight and Cadance, in particular, seem to have been nerfed to hell and back so she’d actually pose a threat to them; we all know how powerful Twilight is, and Cadance had never lost an on-screen fight (not counting Tirek because she’d already given up her powers at that point and didn’t actually try to fight back)until the movie), but she at least seemed to know what she was doing.
I thought he was plenty competent for the most, and plenty menacing for how he conjured up that huge tornado. Plus, he was the “ruler of all the lands south of Equestria”. How many of the other major villains in the series can top that?
He was pretty much a discount Hades anyways.
Yes, I know this is from before Forgotten Friendship aired, but it was a perfect setup, dammit.

Funny how subjective these things can be. I personally felt the Storm King was one of the worst villains, lacking in both menace and competence, and that his jokes fell flat. We see the same thing in completely opposite ways.
Worst: Juniper Montage
Most interesting: King Sombra and The Storm King
Most boring: I hardley find any of them boring.
Funniest: Discord and The Storm King
Most intimidating: Queen Chrysalis, King Sombra, Lord Tirek, and The Storm King
Least intimidating: Juniper Montage
Most sympathetic: Gia Everfree and the Pony of Shadows alias Stygian
Least sympathetic: Queen Chrysalis or Lord Tirek
I’m speaking of her AS A VILLAIN.
Redeemed Sunset is ENTIRELY another history……..
They might be the same character but her former self receives a different treatment for me.
Edited
can you really say sunset has wasted potential when she’s pretty much the star of her spin-off?
Worst: Juniper Montage, followed by Starlight Glimmer.
Most interesting: Arguably Sombra and the Dazzlings.
Funniest: Dazzlings and Discord.
Boring: Pony of shadows.
Most intimidating: Dunno, but I’ll go with Tirek if only because he looks like a demon.
Least intimidating: Juniper Montage
Most sympathetic: Well, to be fair this one is hard as hell, but if Stygian is out of the equation, then maybe Nightmare Moon.
Least sympathetic: Tie between Starlight and Juniper.
Most overrated: I guess I would dare to say, sadly, my favorite one, Discord. Sonata Dusk also counts.
Most Underrated: Sombra and Aria Blaze. To a very lesser degree, villanous Sunset as well.
Most dissapointing: The Storm King.
Most surprisingly liked (I couldn’t find an opposite for dissapointing): The Dazzlings.
Wasted potential: Storm King, Aria Blaze and Sunset Shimmer.
Most relatable: Discord.
Least relatable: Starlight Glimmer.
Middle ground in taste: Midnight Sparkle.
Edited

As I said before it wasn’t a reformation, Stygian wasn’t evil he was just sad… If it wasn’t for The Darkness possessing him he wouldn’t have turned into the Pony of Shadows. It was more like an exorcism, The Darkness is a purely spiritual entity who possesses ponies with envy and hatred in their hearts.
For proof of this just look at Luna: We’ve known for a long time that Luna didn’t turn into Nightmare Moon of her own accord, instead, a Lovecraftian entity took control of her mind and body. Luna and Stygian were both envious and desired more respect and power, it seems highly unlikely that the creature possessing Luna and Stygian are separate entities.
For even more proof look at some of the Pony of Shadows’s dialogue “The Darkness spoke to me, and I listened” almost sounds like Chaos from Warhammer. This makes the Pony of Shadows one of the most intriguing villains to me since we didn’t have an eldritch godly entity as a villain before.
Syndrome became evil because his idol Mr. Incredible was self-centered and brushed him off, just like with Stygian with Starswirl The Bearded. Unlike with Buddy, all it took for Stygian was some hate-filled cloak of darkness or some cliched nonsense while it took years for Syndrome to build up his hatred and his evilness. It didn’t help that Stygian had less of a personality than Syndrome had. I know this might be unfair since I’m comparing a two hour film with two combined 22 minute episodes, but the writers introduced great villains like Chrysalis and Tirek while this one was just lacking. Hell, even Starlight’s motives for her villainy is more believable and justified, if stupid. Anyways, this is just my thoughts.
