Yeah I’m several years late to this party oh well. Well, if I had been watching the show earlier than, uh, after it ended, though it is true that the all-but-explicitly-stated loss of Bright Mac and Pear Butter make a great backstory for Applejack and her siblings, I… and this may just be my denial stage talking because I only saw this particular episode like twenty days ago, but I’d like to think if, IF, Pear Butter and Bright Mac were ever returned then it’d really have to be a lot more than “they just show up,” you know? After a life story like that. Such a thing, to just maybe retain decency to this story, might have to involve an arduous quest, an odyssey if you will, probably with a theme of the struggle with loss, grief, and eventual acceptance chasing the involved characters the whole way.
 
If you’ve played Saints Row 4, though I’m sure there’s better examples, you might want to think about how the Boss became obsessively focused on bringing his friend, Johnny Gat who was thought to have been killed in Saints Row the Third, back after the discovery of a very, very faint hint of a very, very remote possibility that he might still be alive. His denial of the loss of his friend flared, his reckless drive to find Johnny Gat endangered those around him, and his friends had to drag him back to reality. They did eventually find Johnny Gat alive, but I think my point’s been illustrated.
 
So basically, would it be worth taking away these intense feels? Only if there’s a greater amount of feels to be had in the journey of bringing them back, I say. And that is a very, very tall order.

If I’m not mistaken, Lauren wanted to state it right from the getgo but Hasbro wouldn’t allow it. After she left, I guess the staff kept to I and did their best to make subtle hints towards it.

Like everyone else, I’ve also accepted that they’re most likely dead. I would like to think the show hasn’t confirmed it because maybe they have a story idea for Season 9 for some sort of return for either Pear, Bright or both; however, you’re right. To execute this even remotely right, circumstances have to be presented in just the right way, or else the show will have pulled an Ultima IX and just sour the fandom for good. I think we will see Pear and Bright again, but most likely, it will be a story telling of their untimely demise.

As painful as this would be, I can accept Bright Mac and Pear Butter having passed on. But unless they show a pair of gravestones or mention the “d” word on the show, I’m also holding onto the slim and unlikely possibility that Bright Mac and Pear Butter are alive but missing. For all we know, they could have become trapped in a magically-cursed location for years while waiting for somepony to find and free them.

They are consistently referred to in past tense. The episode ends with, “something to remember them by.” They couldn’t show up for their own daughter getting her cutie mark. Why should we think them alive?

they do not say where they are, you do not know what happened to them, people immediately believe that they are dead just for that, who knows
