Description
According to Larson and Faust, Bat Ponies are a separate type of Pony who live in caves in the mountains, but since Equestria is all about The Three Tribes, it makes sense that they would be a race of Pegasi who just adapted to semi-underground life; if that’s the case, it’s not much of a stretch to assume there are also dark-adapted Unicorns and Earth Ponies as well, and I like the headcanon that converting above-ground Ponies to their underground versions is something Princess Luna can do for volunteers.
Thank you SO very much! I’ll be sure you’re credited with the inspiration for it.
Sure. They just seemed to me like the sort of terms Ponies would come up with in-universe for sub-tribes with distinguishing characteristics.
>and everything in it is trademarked.
Wha- that’s not how it works.

The whole book is copyrighted, and everything in it is trademarked.

@TexasUberAlles
terms can’t be copyrighted. they can only be trademarked.
Nevermind, the article I saved was buggered.
Gotta call ya on the Pyrippus too, since I can’t find anything about the name prior to SyFy’s Lost Girl, and the Lost Girl wiki page says the name doesn’t appear in Greek or Roman myth. Unless you know of an older source that can inform us?
Thestrals are an original creation on J. K. Rowling’s part, she made up both their name and appearance for her books. I would expect that even if she doesn’t have the term copyrighted she would still have grounds to seek legal action if the show used it – all other things aside, it would be intellectual theft. Considering that they already had to change Coco Pommel’s name because it was too similar to Coco Chanel (and also that we haven’t seen bat ponies on the show since what, Season 2?), I really don’t think that that’s a can of worms Hasbro is going to be eager to open.
EDIT:
@TexasUberAlles
And there we go, it is copyrighted.
Edited
It’s officially owned by J.K. Rowling, she invented the term and it was copyrighted when the first Harry Potter book was published.
Edited
Just FYI saying that the proper terminology is thestral
FYI, this is MLP:FIM, not Harry Potter.
Theres already a grecco-roman myth abput a bat winged horse.
Pyrippus.
So Pyripian would be a good fit for a proper name more then Thestral ever would be.
Also, Propaganda, every ruler’s best friend when the truth is far more mundane and cruel.

It isn’t. It’s a very popular fanon term, yes, and I can definitely see why it might sound better than “bat pony”, but it’s not the “proper” terminology. It’s not the term used on the show – to my knowledge, the show has never used any official name for them – and it’s not the name of a mythological creature, either – they’re an original creature Rowling invented for her books, and to be honest the Harry Potter thestrals have a lot of characteristics thee guys lack, like bing skeletal and emaciated and only being visible to those who have witnessed and accepted death. Also being strict meat-eaters, although to be honest I can’t remember if that was just added in the movies.
I like to think that Dark Adapted Unicorns are the originator of what Sombra and the other Umbra would eventually become, and that Dark Adapted Earth Ponies are the Pony equivalent of Drow, and thus each Dark Earth Pony is basically Drizzt Do’Urden.
Fitting, where as I am a HUGE fan of the Lunar Guard, and I served in the Corps.
INSTANT favorite.
A’ight, thanks for the rundown.
The biggest differences– aside from the obvious leather wings, curved horns, and larger ears– are adaptations to working in the dark. They have greatly enhanced night vision that lets them see clearly in all but total darkness, and much more sensitive hearing that allows them to echolocate from either ambient noises or by making clicking sounds themselves. It makes them more vulnerable to flashes of bright light and sudden intensely loud noises, but they’re well-trained to respond without being incapacitated, and the rest of the time they are far more effective at night than any day-adapted Pony could be. Bat Ponies trade some speed and stamina for greater maneuverability; they can fly circles around most airborne opponents, but can’t give very effective chase to those who flee. Saberhorns trade raw power– both in spells and telekinesis– for much greater finesse; they couldn’t pick up another Pony and throw him at you, for example, but they could pick up a dozen knives and set them spinning like aerial buzzsaws around you. Nightwalkers trade some strength and stamina for increased agility and stealth; they can move much faster and more deftly while wearing the same class of heavy armor as Day Guard Earth Ponies– in complete silence!– but don’t hit as hard or stay in the fight as long.
If TUA is still watching this thread, I’m suddenly curious – what are the differences? Bat ponies get better night sight, or even echolocation? Bats tend to be much more maneuverable if less enduring flyers; that too? And what’s the difference with a saberhorn and a nightwalker?
