Seriously, the idea of the Shadow Realm STILL gives me occasional nightmares. I doubt I’d even blink if the kept the original stuff involving death.
He’s the jimmy Olson to the main 6’s justice league or the watson to Twilight’s Sherlock. You can’t take the character who’s suppose to keep the others grounded and serve as the audience’s point of refrence and turn him into a hero of ultimate destiny. At least not on a permanent basis.
Spike’s not just any popular character. He’s one of the main characters aside from the other six and Starlight.
You can’t just keep inventing new elements and lob them at every popular character.
Though, the element of loyalty really does suit him.

By that logic Luna also should have been vanquished for good during her stint as Nightmare Moon. I won’t deny Starlight needs to learn from her past misdeeds (which she has in a way with her long-winded reformation), but banishment to limbo for all eternity is not the answer.
