Don’t get me wrong, I can still enjoy playing some old games, like the oldschool Commander Keen and Wolfenstein games, but frustrating difficulty has never, ever been a selling point to me, even back when those games were shiny and new. You can call me ‘complacent’ for preferring most of my games to only murder me once every couple hours, you can arbitrarily handicap yourself if you want a challenge beyond the games made to cater to your masochism.

I think you are not understanding many things, and also feel you are an example of complacency. Many players enjoyed that challenge, and some prefer a game that lasts 2 hours but with high difficulty over a 40 hour game with no challenge.
 
There is no problem with someone playing a walking simulator. There is room for all. But complaining against difficult games and wanting them to change is not acceptable. The crowd demands, the market supplies. Cuphead exists because gamers want it. Gone Home exists because people buy it. Revolution 60 exists because… Well, sometimes someone releases something no one demanded, but that is why financial failures exist.
 
I have grown complacent to. I do not deny that. I am used to be able to lower difficulty settings, to seek guides, to have speedruns. But I miss the old challenge, I miss challenge in general, and slowly leave my comfort zone as the market provides and I realize gaming press coming from non gamers tried to keep me locked in complacency.
 
I avoid playing on any difficulty setting below standard nowadays.
