I think it’s more along the lines of “perseverance pulls you through” and “diligence is always rewarded”.  
Try to think of it as more of an idea than a literal recollection of events. Legends tend to get exaggerated, just look at Beowulf.

That might be, but still. How to Tame your Dragon for example actually made something interesting with the protagonist. He didn’t get buffed like the character here, but found other abilities and perfected them. I honestly expected them to go that route too. For him to find his destiny and with said abilities saving the town. Not to get buffed. I dunno, getting buffed seems just like a lazy way too end the story. It wasn’t really all too exciting in my opinion. And I expected exciting with how Apple Bloom seemed to shake from excitement.

In the old days this is where The Touch would start to play.

Honestly this was my least favorite campfire story. I mean, he suddenly gets engulfed by a light and gains strength? That is not very creative, not to mention the lacking logic.
