I believe the big deal with games in general back in the early 90’s is that they took their time to release the finished product. Graphics and audio were a finished product by the time they decided to release the game to the public, sure there could be some patches or game engine updates, but there was nothing like the rolling early release crud that’s going on now with early financial backers.
I mean I chose to support War for the Overworld, but some people will stroll into the game, see an unfinished product and leave it behind because of only a few features they didn’t like. Had they seen the game in its nearly finished state they probably would have liked it…
I freaking loved Descent as a kid, even if we only had the demo version with the moon levels back which we got on the Sim City 2000 CD if I recall correctly. Either that or Castles II Seige and Conquest. (Remember back when Mac games could be SUPERIOR to the windows versions?) I’ve actually manged to find a version of Sim City 2k that runs on modern computers ALMOST perfectly… but it crashes when you try to save or load a city. ;^; Whyyyyy.
I can at least use the Commander Keen collection through Steam to run those reliably. Fuck yeah.
I think I have a cdrom copy of Cyberia, it’s pretty fun to think back when the atapi ide cdrom disc drive (just a 4x to 8x reader) were the big new thing, I still have one that has a head phone port on it, it even has a play and stop button on it, you just put a music cd in it and it could play music cds all on its own, ahh the good old days of sound blaster pci cards and gen1 usb game controllers…
It would be pretty awesome if there was still an active windows 95 community out there somewhere, I’m planning on firing up VMware pretty soon and start messing around with a bunch of old operating systems, mostly to play my copy of Isaac Asimov’s Robot City, the atmosphere and music in that game are pretty awesome, also I have a thing for self aware robots. Despite the fact that I use Youmu Konpaku as my profile picture, I also really like IOSYS OS and the music they did for the Touhou community.
It reminds me of the “Windows95tips” tumblr, which seems to have been abandoned for a while (ironically enough) but it’s still online.
…also, the OP image makes me think Brownie’s answer should be “they’re more fun than anesthetics.” Which is a horrible pun. But not as horrible as some.
I would love to say that Windows 3.X is Abandonware.
When I think back to 1995,I remember having lots of money, gold, cars and really big computers, my memory is pretty fuzzy though…
Post Y2k, the system clock reset to 1980, so this is actually 2015 :P
I know, I know…
