I believe Faust is on record saying she was inspired by Minas Tirith from The Lord of the Rings when she originally designed Canterlot for the show. It looks like the movie animators are sticking to that vision: a fortress castle perched on an outcropping extending out from a high mountain, and flanked on both sides by a multi-level walled city. Canterlot’s design is a bit more fanciful, but you can chalk that up to its architects being unicorns rather than Numenoreans.
