Looks like I was wrong. The seed pod I was picturing, which these Stingbush pods reminded me of, are from the Sweetgum tree.

Cockleburrs. The burrs don’t actually sting, but they get lodged in hair or fur and can be really painful to remove.
You say that as if DHX hasn’t already created more dangerous versions of real organisms.

There are hundreds of plants that release spiny seeds. In my neighborhood, chestnuts are the ones you have to look out for. At my grandmother’s house, it was a small flower called the white beggartick (Bidens alba).
