Consistent world-building is precluded when there is a line of toys to sell. It could also be something like a London/City of London thing, where the historic areas of Canterlot are based around a vertical castle but the city has grown over time to be more horizontal.

It looks like just a citadel on the side of the mountain. But it’s a complete vast city when they go in it.

Some views of Canterlot I remember seeing in the past, seem to suggest that all of Canterlot is more tall than wide, like it’s mostly a castle and not so much a town… But the recent episode shows it being more wide than tall, like there’s a town with a wall around it and a castle to one side…  
I wish the show was more consistent… :[

I LOVED this scene. Adored it.

I really adore the art direction the show has been taking. There has been a heavy use of more detailed textures and art (Fluttershy’s cottage, Zecora’s hut, the inside of Town Hall) and uses of lighting and shadow (This scene from Celestial Advice, when Pinkie gets out on her balcony during the “Pinkie’s Lament” song during the episode “Pinkie Pride”) and in the small preview clips we’ve been seeing, all of that is culminating into the MLP movie with heavy use of lighting and shadows as well as more detailed textures on top of the new art style they are trying out.
 
 
As someone who enjoys watching the progression of art styles in animated shows that have been on for a long time, it’s quite exciting to see it happening here in MLP as well.
