Remember when nearly the entire fandom thought it was a good idea to keep the movies separate from the show, if for no other reason than to not make the EqG movies essential viewing to understand something in the show?
 
I would say “be careful what you wish for”, but I’m pretty sure the separation was put in place without regard to the opinions of bronies.
 
But hey, if it makes you feel better to have a patently-false reason to hate on Starlight Glimmer, in addition to genuine reasons and opinions of varying validity, keep on keepin’ on.

You’re right. Starlight was never meant to replace Sunset. The Writers (A.K.A. Word of God) said as much via making the EQG series canon to FiM and stating it specifically.

Exactly. Celestia’s first line after Twilight came back through the mirror was “Sunset Shimmer, is she alright?”

A passive-aggressive letter like that would be a good way to make her feel better about losing Sunset going forward.

…But Celestia did show worry when Sunset showed up. The first thing she asked Twilight about when she returned was if Sunset was okay.
