It’s called an autantonym (lit: self-opposite) English is full of them,
Fast: Can mean to move rapidly or not at all.
Dust (verb): Can mean to add or remove.
Cleave: Cling to or split.
Overlook: Have a view of or miss completely.

Think about the word “awesome”.
A lot of people use it to mean “something really good”, but it really just means “something that causes awe”. You can be awed by something really good, and by something really terrible.
With zero knowledge of Japanese, I’d guess the safest translation would be “impressive”.
Also is this shipping, given the “affections” thing?

Don’t even. えらい can mean either “great” or “terrible.” And it’s usually written in kana alone when it means “terrible,” according to Jisho.
Yeeeaaaah, I think OP might have tweaked the translation a bit…..(Because “Great” & “Terrible” are two totally different words. Unless I’m on Mars…)
