To be fair, it was one of the earlier ones to make it to modern popular culture in the West that wasn’t censored, unlike the magic circles that incorporated pentagrams or hexagrams in video games from the ’80s and part of the ‘90s.
Also, she’s actually drawing the circle rather than it appearing below her, so more people are probably going to go for a Fullmetal Alchemist reference rather than a JRPG reference. Having said that, yes, of course, alchemists and magic circles predate quite a few things to say the least.
