“Just relax and let the hooks do their work.”

“n-no.”
“it is isn’t it! I am so sick of these things!”
“so have you learned your lesson?”
“buck this I’m going to cast the mind control spell on myself.”
“wait you can’t–dammit. and I was having so much fun being evil again!”
The Elements fight corruption and evil, not chaos. Nightmare Moon wasn’t chaotic.
Austraeoh, no? Seriously, it was pretty obvious that artefacts created to fight Chaos won’t work against the entity of pure Order. Trying to use the most powerful WMD they have (Dash) and then retreating to find something new if this proved to be ineffective would be the best strategy for our heroes.
From what I remember, The elements were only ever Successfuly used twice in the show.
Hardly overused, but they still needed to go. There were only so reasons the show could contrive for the heroes not to use their win button before it started to get silly.

Hmm. Yes, I will rewatch that. That would be once concern dealt with reasonably. Even if it would be in contrast to what this frame here claims.
Actually, you should re-read the comic. Right before they try to use the Elements, Accord says that the Elements won’t defeat him without Twilight. Then he dares them to try them on him anyway, which was probably him baiting them.
The magic of the Elements CAN be used in conjunction with other spells, even without all the bearers present (see Magical Mystery Cure and the cutie mark swapping spell). They can also affect the bearers due to the connection between them.
Starlight did not have to contend with “the full force of the Elements of Harmony”. That would have required Twilight to be there as well. Accord only used the Elements to spread his mind control to everpony, which would have happened eventually anyway, faster thanks to the Elements. Thus, the only thing Starlight had to withstand was Accord’s mind control, which she had been doing fine up until then, thanks to that shield Celestia put on her.
Yes, Starlight didn’t even make the shield. If you look close at the previous page, her horn isn’t glowing. It’s just the same shield she’s had the whole time, that Celestia made.
Celestia is the MVP of this arc.

In what fanfiction does that end up in other way than with Dash splattered in the ground and Discord complaining that his suit was ruined?
Well, we never saw the map blast anypony. We did see Starlight use it to break the limitations on that time travel spell…
As for your second point, yeah, that’s my problem as well. That, and the fact that it’s not how the Elements work. At all. They should’ve just have Accord overpower Celestia’s shield in a moment of distraction and let him deliberately leave Starlight for last. To taunt her, for example. “I’m succeeding where you failed”, that stuff.
Map was made by the same force as the elements, don’t see how it could be any different. And Sunset less tampered with it than used it in another dimension with even laxer, unclear rules.
And I wouldn’t claim that without having an urge to vomit, but how else does she survive the elements backfiring and giving Accord more power?
Edited
Now wait, that’s not the same. The map is not the same as the actual Elements. Plus, the show has also been consistent about how a direct Harmony Blast from the Elements means game over. Certain elements (or Elements) can be tampered with, like Sunset Shimmer did, but a direct attack will defeat any given foe, even Discord. Would you honestly claim Starlight is supposed to be more powerful than Discord?
It would make sense if the Elements just didn’t work because Celestia isn’t a bearer anymore. That also has precedence. But that hasn’t been hinted at at all.
Mind you, she already cannoodled the map into letting her use its energy, broke it that way, and then found out how to repair it.
So the comic isn’t saying anything the show doesn’t also endorse.
Hey, where you been?
Edited
Yeah, thankfully Starlight was able to talk Accord down, and Celestia did not remain brainwashed for very long, and was the first to admit that it was nice to have Discord back after being under Accord’s control for a few minutes with no free will.
Still, doesn’t help with salvaging this arc due to putting the Mane Six and Royal Sisters into another position where they end up needing to have their sorry flanks bailed out by Starlight because they couldn’t defeat the big bad themselves.
