he wasn’t perfect by any means and i disagreed with a lot of his policies (cough drones cough neoliberal/centrist economics cough), but goddamn if he hasn’t been a likeable public figure at the very least. he’s still president for another 30 minutes but knowing what’s coming next i can’t help but wax lyrically…

I think you’re leaving out a wee bit of just how much the electorate turned out to hate Hillary Clinton and her wagon train full of baggage, but for the most part, see earlier comment about eight years of childish obstructionism. A solid 90% of the Obama Administration’s deadlock and ineffectual dithering and resounding lack of any real accomplishments aside from the flaming garbage scow of the ACA was inarguably and incontrovertably due to the Republican Party marching in lockstep to derail and dismantle literally every single thing Obama proposed and the Democrat Party tried to implement. Discounting the effect that sad, sorry display had on public dissatisfaction and the THROW THE BUMS OUT! attitude that put Trump in office is disingenuous to the point of laughing out loud.
