If you intended the moon to be a “tangible” crescent, disregard the following.
 
 
The crescent of the moon is caused by shadow of the planet and changes in alignment between moon and the Sun. It’s simply the lit part of the Moon - the unlit part is still there and cannot show stars through. In fact, if you look closely you’ll see the dark part as well in the clear sky.
