Even closer to how short-range teleport works in the show is the misty step spell (from 4th and 5th edition D&D), which is low-level enough to be given to eladrin elves as a racial ability.
False equivalency. Twilight dedicated her whole life to study and magic. She’s demonstrated feats equal to Starswirl, which I feel is arguably the most-powerful regular unicorn in canon. Rarity’s spell was nothing special. “Detect diamonds” sounds like a pretty generic thing that wouldn’t be hard to recreate, despite it being her signature spell. Diamonds are pure carbon. Whipping up a spell that detects masses of pure carbon doesn’t sound like it would require much study and effort at all for someone who’s entire life was dedicated to magic.
Just because she can make dresses while there are plenty of distractions around does not mean she has the mental capability to learn and pull off a teleport. Unicorn magic levels are a canon thing, mentioned in “Magic Duel.” So we’ve already got a system in place that ranks unicorns based on their magic ability. This is canon per the show. There are some spells that low-ranking unicorns can’t do.
I’ll repeat what someone else said. Trixie can’t teleport. While she’s nowhere near Twilight’s level, she is more magically-inclined than Rarity. Her act would greatly benefit from her being able to teleport. Yet she can’t. If it were as simple as sitting down with a book, she would’ve learned it by now.
Actually, we never saw Twilight training Rarity’s signature spell. Finding diamonds, one that she learned by herself. All we have is Spike telling Twilight about the spell and she concentrating to make it work. Now, I think some spells requiere training and concentration.
If Rarity can create clothes for 2 stores with her sister at her house I think she can learn to concentrate for a teleportation of a couple of meters
While that sequence with the dresses was really cool, I don’t think it was a thing that was literally happening.
The fact that she was able to create a new world for Hoity Toity to feel after every dress that she showed using just illusions is quite impressive. The alterations aren’t that great but the fact the Twilight only struggled once when teleporting and that was half way across town. So Rarity teleporting a short distance isn’t that hard to believe for me. If you don’t want to believe that, it is up to you.
Ofc not, but artist probably thought that blink is a common spell when it’s not.
Or, it’s a spell only taught in Celestia’s school.
Teleport users have been so far: Twi, Sunset, Starlight. Twi and Sunset know it, and Starlight learned it from Twilight.
It’s possible that Rarity at some point learned blink from Twilight as well, which explains why Trixie couldn’t do it; because she had no access to someone who could teach blink.
I’m still salty knowing that Trixie is actually less magical than Rarity.
By what metric do we know that’s high level?
Rarity doesn’t look desperate. Also, even Trixie couldn’t pull off a legit teleportation spell and that actually became a plot point–and all she needed was ten feet, and she was in a desperate situation, too. Teleportation for the longest time has been Twilight’s signature move and the only other who could teleport was Discord. Vinyl Fluff is right in saying that, when Sunset teleported, it was a display of her skill, to establish Sunset as a really powerful magic user similar to Twilight.
Teleportation isn’t a spell any unicorn can pull off in desperation and hope it lands correctly. Twilight fried Spike when she teleported out of desperation and Starlight fried Trixie when she quickly teleported her out of Manticore’s mouth–and that was ten feet.
To have both Rarity and Starlight come out unscathed implies expertise. So, either Rarity legit knows how to teleport short distances, or the artist underestimated the spell. I don’t mind Rarity knowing the spell tbh. I mean, her work sometimes require her to move around the workplace and short distance teleportation seem like a very useful spell to have. Still, I just can’t accept that Rarity knows blink and Trixie still doesn’t.
Even if it were one foot, I’d still say it’s beyond Rarity’s abilities at this point because it’s been made out as a high-level spell. Rarity has no training whatsoever in magic from what we’ve seen in the show.
It’s kind of like a non-athlete suddenly pulling off an Olympic-level move on the elevated bars.
Though here, she’s shown teleporting all of about 10 feet (the “ka-zap” effect implying where she started). So it could be logically argued that she pulled it off in desperation.
As presented in the show, even unicorns require study and training to do such spells (Unless you’re Starlight, cough cough) and teleportation is a high one. Twilight herself couldn’t even precisely control it until later and she was far, far into her studies by then. So given that Rarity’s never been shown with one ounce of interest in expanding her magical abilities, I think it’s simply an artist error.
Remember, it was also used as a quick way to show Sunset’s level of power when she immediately teleported to escape Twilight’s own teleportation. It’s not something your average unicorn can do.

God is there ANYONE who can be a more perfect Waifu?
You forgot Sunset Shimmer.

Sunset can do it, too. It’s the first magic we see out of her, even.
