Ugh, I wish more people understood this. Instead of bashing characters that I love, worse when they misunderstand

One of the things I absolutely LOVE about Starlight’s conversion was that she wasn’t beaten, she was convinced to stop. Too many times a character’s redemption arc follows an ass-kicking which weakens the villain’s resolve making them susceptible to an almost lazy persuasion by the protag. (I’m looking at you, every Shonen Anime ever)
 
But that wasn’t the case here.
 
Starlight wasn’t weak when Twilight got through to her, she was actually at her strongest. They had countless fights and Starlight never once failed to derail that race. She only had to destroy the spell then interrupt the race one last time to lock in her success and there was nothing Twilight could do to prevent that. But it was in that situation that Twilight won.
 
She didn’t change her personality with the elements of harmony.  
She didn’t overpower her.  
She didn’t even trick her.
 
She empathized with her.
 
She saw Starlight’s pain, her enemy’s pain, and spoke to that.  
She gave Starlight something he hadn’t had in years.  
She gave her hope.
 
I think it’s one of the most beautiful moments in the whole series when Twilight convinces Starlight to trust her.

Being evil is typically not something you can change. Only ignore. Unless you’ve got years to work at it that is.
 
The same can be said of just about any trait you let get out of hand. Once you’re an adult it’s incredibly hard to undo it. A single moment of regret is never ever enough. And a cursed object too would not be able to change you in such a short time either.
 
Or maybe you are an oddity and can be swayed to good or evil super easily. There’s probably a word for that. But a big problem with all this talk of evil, is that I think people are equating “making a bad/selfish decision” with “being evil”. Wanting power and capturing people is not inherently evil. Wanting revenge is though, for revenge is about causing suffering to another with nothing to gain. Trixie is the only one that has demonstrated real evil. Pretty sure. Funny since she was never a real villain, not even being shown in the image above.

well I have a loving family, a few good friends, a reasonable job, I’m rarely board anymore and all who have mock or tormented me in the past have purity shitylives, all in all I just have a good life so I think good has benefited me greatly thank you very much

But evil gives you freedom and no responsibility. You don’t have to worry about other people’s lives, other than yourself. You don’t need them, just like they don’t need you.

True but the the desire to change was her own, That’s what I got out of the post anyway.

Or such as in this case, you can change if you have someone who provides the moral guidance you yourself don’t have. It isn’t quite accurate to say Star changed all by herself, really.

Imo all of those fall under the above categories, maybe except the one ring because while it is evil, it doesn’t make you do evil stuff.
