Description

You know, I sometimes hear people say Twilight or Rainbow Dash or any other number of mains are Canon Mary Sues. I can only assume that this is because they do not realize how bad things can get.

THIS is Ryo. He appears out of nowhere 2/3rd’s into Digimon Tamers’s run, he’s all daaaaark and mysterious, has a supercool demon-dragon Digimon with powers on par with the strongest villains in the show at this point, takes attention away from the main cast to ruminate on his tragic past, and the main, badass female lead falls head over heels for him. This is not helped by the fact that the only explanation for how he has ANYTHING on this scale of power is a handful of obscure Wonderswan games, none of which is touched on in show, but Ryo fans ALWAYS use these to defend his poorly written introduction. Well, to quote SFDebris, you don’t get credit for stuff you don’t put in the show because you didn’t put it in the show. If I need to play a bunch of product placement games to understand your fanwank of a character, then you have failed as a writer.

The only character arc as annoying as this was Impmon’s, but at least with Impmon they explained who he was and why he was like this, and his actions were shown to have real consequences. Ryo is just bad fanfic made manifest. Like widdle Nyxy here. XD

I reset my password to an account I haven’t used in years, just so I could hate comment on this ancient post from 2012, to say-
Rika and Ryo were never implied to have been in love in Tamers, that’s the fanon trap either misinforming or creating that false memory phenomenon. (I would know as I have rewatched the show multiple times, both English sub and dub in recent memory.) Also Ryo was never even supposed to be in the original script, but the producers wanted to shoehorn him in for marketing reasons lol, tho I agree that was a really dumb decision to make. (Seriously he featured in what, 1 or 2 games for a console that was pretty niche even in Japan, and never released outside. What were they thinking?) He also appeared in 02 very briefly in Ken’s memories as a cameo, and maybe in another shot later.
You get a laugh at Nyx but for an Alicorn OC with an edgy past, a lot of power, and a soft personality; she sure doesn’t get her way much lol

Also, You clearly only saw the English dub. Japanese Dubbing tells us that TAKATO received the Data, Not Ryo.

Ryo’s big sword wasn’t because of Rika. Gallentmon received it, not Justimon.

Sigh, don’t expect every since bit of friendly ribbing to start a pairing. Digimon Tamers broke the original idea of the show being fairly Light Hearted and jumped right into Dark and Heavy Territory.

In Fact, I suspect the 2016 Digimon Movie was following on that.

Anyway, Digimon Tamers was already rather dark from the start, and add to the fact that it’s one of the few Digimon Shows that actually had the Digimon kill and Absorb other digimon, whereas the rest of them had the digimon revert to a Digiegg, it’s actually one of those that was Not meant for the squeamish. (
Leomon
being stabbed on those claws, looked EXTREMELY painful.)

Anyway, I don’t expect a relationship to pop out between Ryo and Rika. They spent too little time together and Rika started out Hating Ryo. Add to the fact that Ryo left the Team just before Rika returned to the group, meant that she spent too little time with him.

Oh, and as for the part about Yoko and Kamina? They spent time together and warmed up after a while in a realistic manner. Rika spent very little time with Ryo and Only Warmed up near the end. Add to the fact that Ryo lives in a Different City from Shinjuku, and you’ve got a distance problem to go with it.

The End wasn't The End - Found a new home after the great exodus of 2012

@Magma-Fox: You’d be surprised at how many pairs in Japanese fiction that involve at least one of the characters being “sarcastic” or doing some “friendly ribbing” that end up being official (or at least implied) couples to some extent. (Yoko/Kamina, anyone? Also, Hector/Lyn. Heck, I’d even argue the stranded ship that is Ash/Misty would be one too.)

@Pepsi_Al
That was Rika being Snarky. You know, Sarcastic?

Could have been friendly ribbing as well, as in she’d accepted Ryo as a Friend.

I know this is six months late, but I felt I needed to add what I’d missed.

She didn’t. In fact, she down right hated him.

Then she warmed up to him. Even to the point that, as Sakuyamon, she willingly gave him some of her’s and Renamon’s strength during the climax of the series. She even asks him if Ryo’s stand against the D-Reaper was an attempt to impress her.

Only the Fans started that pairing. In fact, I noticed that Rika’s interest was more set on Takato, but that was much later. First signs of her attraction for Takato was after Leomon’s death, when they were about to enter Zhuqiaomon’s palace, when she asked him about Takato sending a message to her mother.

Can someone please explain to me why Derpibooru hates Nyx without raging? Seriously, I don’t get it.

Hell there was a easy way they could have used Ryo. He acts as their Guide in the Digital World. Bam! You get the cameo the execs want. He doesn’t end up being a gary stu, and he leaves the plot once they return to earth (because he’s trying to find away back to his own universe, and all). Everyone Wins!

Since the Beginning -

I heard that in the wonderswan games he is revealed to be veemon’s(Yes the exact same veemon from Adventure 02) real partner instead of davis/daisuke.
Although I might have remembered or read that wrong.
Cirno9destiny

Well to be fair Impmon/Beelzemon was supposed to be the main antagonist, but then they came up with the D-reaper, so i think they can be forgiven.
Ryo on the other hand… agreed. The only good thing I can think about him is the fact Machinedramon wasn’t killed in Adventure…

Take this despair!
Impmon is an ass. But then again what is a show without it’s share of assholes besides Tamers has Guilmon and I like Guilmon.

Everyone online is a middle aged FBI agent. Even you, even me, even people on boards that can only be accessed from outside the FBI’s jurisdiction. No exceptions. Even the people claiming to be FBI agents are FBI agents, just not the ones that they claim they are.

@TheAbridgenator

The series was pretty damn clear that Impmon was total douchebag. His entire character arc consisted of him learning to grow the fuck up and to stop taking his petty, stupid frustrations out on the world.

And yeah, he took up a lot of time early on, before he stopped being such a little shit. I enjoyed the end of it, but he was an annoying waste of space at the beginning. Props for fighting a dude the size of Godzilla while being the size of a housecat, though.

Digimon Adventure 02 was fun on the whole, even though depowering the original cast was annoying, but I don’t think anyone like the ending. Especially that epilogue.

@RIG Yup! And they NEVER expand upon this past in show, meaning that you have to play the game to understand just WTF is going on with this idiot.
