@Nittany Discord: You mean “spirit”. Which Nyx would be a reincarnation of, given the spirit’s identity. And I asked mainly because DNA is often left behind on everything everyday, and I can’t imagine any traces of altered DNA becoming “unaltered” after the body of DNA’s original owner returns to a natural state. It was something I was thinking about in the midst of taking the “created from NMM’s remains” thing to its logical conclusion.

I never read the sequels. I only read the main fic.
 
If an official sequel references Nightmare Rarity, then, yes, she could be related to Rarity, especially if Past Sins happens after the NMR arc in the comics. Otherwise Nyx herself wouldn’t have any blood relation to Rarity. I can totally agree she might be blood related to Luna since NMM’s bits are basically bits of Luna, but if the comics are canon, and Luna was possessed, then Nyx would be related to the possessing spirits.
 
This is getting to nerd levels of nitpickery, though.

@Nittany Discord: If by “main story”, you mean the fanfic itself, I will point out that the comics were outright referenced in its sequels. Plus, there’s also the thing about Nyx’s mane and tail. From a development standpoint, it was caused by wonky color settings on Pen Stroke’s tablet. But from a story standpoint, I wouldn’t be too surprised if that purple mane and tail came from scraps of jewel-encrusted gold among NMM’s remains.

Seriously, though, if you haven’t read Past Sins, you wouldn’t know why those tags are here. That fic is almost as old as the show itself. Explanation under the spoilers.
 
Nyx, the black alicorn filly, is the reincarnation of Nightmare Moon created by a cult from the ashes of NMM and Twilight’s blood. This explains the “sisters” tag. Twilight finds Nyx in the story, takes her in, and eventually adopts her, thus explaining the “mother and daughter” tag.
