I’ve never heard of that, and none of my dorms from either of my universities ever did anything of the sort, so it must be a regional thing or something.

Well, I never did go to college or lived with people other than my family, so there was never a good time to bring it up. You would think I would have learned this earlier after half a lifetime browsing the internet, but apparently not :D
Just a little further information, I mostly heard about the tie/sock on the door thing in my college dorms, where two people shared one room. The door would always be locked when neither of us were there, and so simply locking the door wouldn’t have told me my roommate was banging his girlfriend. Hence the tie/sock/what-have-you.
Then when Spike has to talk about where you are, he can say, “she and her wife are on the moon. They’ll be back pretty soon.”

This leads to the question of how Spike learned what the sock on the door means. Did he walk in on somepony during Twilight’s school days? That must have led to some very awkward questions…
All these rules of etiquette that I’ve never learned before. Learn something new every day :D

You know, I’ve never known this. I thought the sign was actually locking your door. For why would anyone ever lock their doors unless they didn’t wish to be disturbed? :3
A sock on the door is roommate sign for don’t come in the dorm/apartment I’m having sex.
a sock on the doorknob is a widely accepted sign for “Do Not Disturb: having sex”
