I found the controls easy enough after a while. In my most recent playthrough, I figured out you can farm iguana leather and White Jaguar Pelts on great inagua. Can also kill the white jags via QTEs and not waste ammo, if you’re quick enough.
Though, lately I’ve been playing a different open world ubisoft game and totally ignoring the storyline.
A controller.
Are you using a controller or a keyboard?
Okay. Well I’m done ranting. I’m out.
It’s a sort of alternate history where these guys resolved a bunch of major crises in history, but got edited out of real history books by the Templars. The games and movies made by Abstergo edit and twist things to make the assassins look evil or misguided. In IV, they make the footage into a Pirates of the Caribbean-like movie.
Which is why there’s recorded documents of Leonardo De Vinci giving a man in a white hooded cloak retractable wrist daggers and a native american dodging concentrated musket volleys to scalp a British general right? Me thinks history is being more than merely experienced.

I’m not questioning the existence of the health system. I’m questioning why after experiencing several other injuries over the course of his adventure does merely getting a puncture from foliage render Conway helpless. After most likely receiving several large splinters in his person from all the cannon shots his ship has taken, the beatings, the slash and stab wounds from various blades, the ball bullet wounds from muskets and flintlocks, why does a branch do him in? And while I’m at it, why is it that even though he knows he’s out manned and on the verge of passing out due to blood loss does Conway doesn’t utilize his smoke bombs or his guns or his darts or hell anything to even the odds and give him some sort of advantage and a chance to escape?
The thing about getting stabbed with a branch is that health is actually synchronization. If you lose all your health, you get desynced since the person whose memories you’re reliving obviously didn’t die until after the events of the game. So basically, no protagonists ever took damage outside of cutscenes.
Of course, that also brings up the existence of medicine you can use to restore health/synchronization, but you know what, it’s just a video game. The health system is hardly the most unrealistic thing.
Because you’re experiencing history in the AC games, not rewriting it.
Because I literally caught and killed the signal guy but got “Desynced” because the story demanded that he get bombarded by cannon fire and die.
How could he have prevented Blackbeard’s death when Blackbeard actually went out that way?
And the whole goddamn assassin’s guild guilt tripping Conway into giving up his own goals and ambitions because “Piwacy is bad and you should feew bad for steawing our cwothes”. And not even explaning just what the hell “Nothing is true and everything is permitted” actually means to the guild other than it being a cool sounding creed. And bleeding out due to getting punctured by a branch despite taking multiple gunshots and sword slices over the course of the game. And not being able to prevent Blackbeard’s death.
Edited
And stealth missions with a ship. Don’t forget about those.
Let’s not forget all the dumbass moments the protagonist displays in the story either like forgetting twice in critical moments that he has smoke bombs.
It’s very much worth it. The naval battles and the whole pirate atmosphere is the best the AC series has given us. That and Rogue are worth the time.
I can’t recommend RG enough if sailing was your favorite part of ACIV
If you want a space version, Rebel Galaxy exists. Has a bit of Freelancer in it too.
There’s also Tempest on Steam.
