Description

Beloved by young girls around the world, Hasbro’s My Little Pony franchise has been mired in controversy since its debut in the early 1980s. Critics dismissed the cartoons as toy advertisements, and derided their embrace of femininity. The 2010 debut of the openly feminist My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic renewed the backlash, as its broad appeal challenged entrenched notions about gendered entertainment.

This first comprehensive study of My Little Pony explores the history and cultural significance of the franchise through Season 5 of Friendship Is Magic and the first three Equestria Girls films. The brand has continued to be on the receiving end of a sexist double standard regarding commercialism in children’s entertainment, while masculine cartoons such as the Transformers have been spared similar criticism. The high-profile fans known as Bronies are also discussed, covering the media’s problematic reaction to them and the Bronies’ response when the My Little Pony cartoons didn’t conform to their expectations.

“[…]covering the media’s problematic reaction to them and the Bronies’ response when the My Little Pony cartoons didn’t conform to their expectations.”
Seems like it’s heading to “honest portrayal of both the good and the bad of the fandom” for me.The use of “problematic” ,that word that trigger so much channers nowadays is used agaisnt the media so what’s your damage ,people ? Also stop geting so mad when people dare to suggest fandoms (as in the whole concept of fandoms ,not especially us bronies) are blameless little angels. It’s important to see both side of the issues and to recognize the stereotype of unpleasable Simpsons Comic Book Guys didnt come out of nowhere. Also that part about “conforming to [bronies] expectations ring so true that it’s hurt.I’m not going to put examples to no start drama but this fandom has more than once had disproportionate expectations for a show called “Friendship Is Magic” and more than once those expectations were in totla contradictions with the central message of a show for little girl called “Friendship Is Magic”

In this context, “problematic” is a weasel word, a “term for words and phrases aimed at creating an impression that a specific and/or meaningful statement has been made, when only a vague or ambiguous claim has been communicated, enabling the specific meaning to be denied if the statement is challenged.”

Can someone give me a quick synopsis about what “problematic” means in this context? I think I’ve seen it used like that before (and I’m thinking it’s probably a red flag), but I’m not 100% on what they mean.

Yeah, this could be a distorted, biased hatchet job. Or it could be an honest portrayal of both the good and the bad of the fandom.

My money’s on the first option, though.

It stings knowing that you enjoy a feminist show, doesn’t it?

That is only true if you ignore the prototype My Pretty Pony which did come out in 1981. Which you shouldn’t as that would be disingenuous and wrong.

Also, the brand started in 1982, not 1981. Already this book is showing signs that the author didn’t do a whole lot of research.

Yeah it kind of worries me that this is going to end up being about Bronies stealing the show away and how they are gross. I really, really hope I am wrong though.

But being serious, I cannot wait for this book to come out. (Though I know a ton of the history already, loved MLP since age 2). Some of the younger generations (the children that is) will get a blast from the past. ;)

This description worries me a bit, I can’t tell if this is likely to depict bronies as like “Hey here is this unusual sub-culture that unexpectedly formed for this show.” Or as “Hey look at these gross guys stealing this girls show.”
